William Osier, founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital said “To study the phenomena of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all.” Alfred Korzybski remarked that "the map is not the territory" and that "the word is not the thing". It's the same about spirituality, isn't it?
In Buddhism, there are three kinds of wisdom (knowledge, understanding):
1. wisdom via reflections (knowledge that is thought out). 2. wisdom via studying (knowledge that is learned from others). 3. wisdom via mental development (knowledge that is gained by development or practice).
