I do agree with Gruntal on another thread (about spirit guide) and want to say something. But I think it will be more appropriate to post it here instead. The last Season of the Rains, before the Buddha’s decease, was spent by him in a little village called Beluva. There a serious illness befell him. But moved by the wish that the monks living in other places should have one last opportunity of seeing him before his death, he suppressed his illness by an effort of will.
The episode below occurred about ten months before he passed away:
After a few more words, he made that solemn and weighty utterance which, in the context briefly sketched here, carries a particular emphasis and significance:
"Be your own island, Ānanda (his brother and faithful attendant for many years), be your own refuge! Do not take any other refuge! Let the Teaching be your island, let the Teaching be your refuge; do not take any other refuge!" P.S. If you are curious what the Teaching, the sole way, he meant in this context, . It's Satipatthana (4) or mindfulness.
