Doing a bit of internet surfing over Los Angeles poet Charles Bukoski. Well Bukoski wasn't really all that much provincial to L.A. or any place else. At his best he was the spokesman for the down and dirty. If you were born of desperation just grubbing it out and wondered what the big thing about self respect and esteem was here was someone you could identify with.
The fact that Bukoski looked like a bum was more then a little self assuring too. It was actually of great comfort! Especially if you felt like you were born to break mirrors just by gazing into them.
Alas he admitted when he "made it" he lived comfortably. He was less prone to drink himself to death. Cynicism goes hand in hand with the dysfunctional. There is nothing that puts the muckraker out of a job faster then a dearth of something to get upset with.
So one of the drawing points of the Old Time Religion was the fire and brimstone. And how to avoid it. The New Age was more about accepting yourself via spiritual study and inspiration. That is good as far as it goes. The things we want to do; the things we want to be: it shouldn't be just because we will be punished if we don't.
There is nothing wrong with being human. But it isn't always something to boast about either. The dirt we accumulate can be washed off and the scars we accumulate can be tactfully covered over. Dirty clothes can be a badge of honor for work accomplished but you don't need to remind everybody of that for all eternity.
Sometimes life is a tragedy. But then how do you feel when the bad times end? Eternal boredom? Does peace cause one to be fat and lazy? More to the point is what motivates us.
And what happens when we finally reach our goals ...
