Hi, everyone! I just recently moved to Miami Beach and trying to get more in touch with my spiritual side and working on loving myself. Looking forward to what I can learn on here!

Religion is all about defeating your ego brother. The word ego only has three letters but people will take you to court, severe ties, and perform a lot of drastic actions over their ego. Suffering in hardship is the highest of all worships advice you must burn to defeat the ego. Prayers alone can’t defeat the ego whilst prayers do help in terms of cleaning ones self and soul but in terms of progress one must burn in hardship to melt the ego
None but the one whose thrown himself at the fire can tell you what love is (saying by myself)

It is debatable how necessary pain is. Especially self inflicted pain. Suffering might be better considered as an experience then a retribution. People tend to get arrogant if life is too easy and painless but masochism isn't the ticket to Heaven either.
Compassion is the ultimate goal but human's were not programmed to think and be that way. I'm guessing you already figured out you are less then perfect. And how hard it is to be so. That is why some religions preach redemption via a third party ( a savior ) as opposed to working your way to Heaven. Otherwise it is an impossible task.
That is not technically true. You can love and forgive yourself all by yourself. But - this might be important - that is not the same as willful ignorance. Your conscience will point out things to you that you might need to work on. If so just forgive yourself and presumably stop doing them. The self love follows naturally.
