One of the most devastating books I ever read was COMPULSORY MISEDUCATION by Paul Goodman originally written in the 1960's . One of his many eerie predictions was the need for skilled workers would go down - and not up - over the years. Implicit in that was the question of why we were staking so much of our futures in long and complex schooling for jobs that increasingly no longer existed or had any future. But now I think it goes even beyond that.
It used to be, at least starting in the Industrial Revolution, religious ( or spiritual ) education was just something you did on Sundays or after school hours. Sort of like character building. Or maybe to carry on the ethnic traditions. But for example the Jews discovered the Kosher way of life could not be learned just but dropping by the synagogue at your convenience sometime on the Sabbath.
We used to envision a time when humans were freed from manual labor and could spend more time in meaningful or "lofty pursuits". Now it is bordering on desperation time when very few need ( or can afford ) anybody to do things for them anymore. Employment gives meaning to your life not to mention keeping you from starving.
That is why the study of things like economics is so sublime. And terribly frightening. Somebody somewhere has to work and work hard to make it all so in our physical existence. If not we all eventually become impoverished. Any one person might decide rather or not to pursue wealth in lieu of other things. But I perceive the world is slipping in it's ability to provide opportunity to it's inhabitants. As you say we as species could elevate to the spiritual realm as a natural progression.
Or just as easy degrade to hatred and resentment when everything just gets more and more expensive with no way to afford it.
