Hi Robert,
A very interesting post. It's funny how many feel that if what is happening in the present isn't right, they need to go back to a time when it was done better. When as you have pointed out, by nature human beings are designed to evolve and do things better. But just because something is done differently, does not mean it is better does it. Is not the point to take the best of how things were done at any point in time. Get rid of what didn't work, and go with what did. Rather then just reverting back. As rarely, is any one way without its flaws.
As you say, some want to return to source and feel to do this, they must return to a more orthodox or purist way of doing something. I agree with you, removing ourselves from the world, also removes us from the life experiences that help us grow. I'm not saying that spending time in isolation has no merit. Because I think it can help reset our thoughts and perceptions. Allow us to recharge, mentally and physically. Particularly when someone has become caught up in and pressurised by the more materialistic, rat in a maze scenario that a very hectic or stressful lifestyle can create. I'm sure we've all had a yen at some time to just pack ourselves off to a desert island or high mountain retreat simply to escape from stress and anxiety. But to detach completely, is just as unhealthy to me as someone working themselves to death by the age of 50. Its all about balance isn't it. As the Buddhists say walking the middle way.
Inspiration - why do we assume it comes from something other than ourselves. I believe our brains, our ability to problem solve, to intuite, and to think in more then two dimensional terms is part of our human heritage, just as much as it is a manifestation of the divine spark we all carry. It is hard to be creative when we are consumed by other thoughts. That is why I believe great idea's are born when we are relaxed, sleeping or being creative in another way. That creative spark flows more freely, when our minds are not fixated on other things. I do believe that spirit can influence us. But I do not believe that all of the inventions and fantastic works of art that we produce are the product of some other force, and not simply something beautiful or worthwhile that we can produce on our own merit, when the conditions are right.
Each person is a unique human being, capable of greatness and depths of depravity, depending on how they choose to focus their personal power. Each facet of the human consciousness incredibly complex. We can be damaged. We are also very much products of our environment and upbringing arn't we. Nurture and good role models are imperative. Having said that though, many can overcome the disadvantages of a difficult early life, and others who have had all the advantages of good upbringing, can become violent and antisocial misfits. That is also a mystery to me. I believe physically, mentally and spiritually.Everything that happens to us can affect what we do or how far we go in life. While self obsession is not healthy. I believe a degree of self nurturement and self love is essential. To know we are responsible for taking care of ourselves properly and how we act or react to others. Only by living in the moment and interacting properly with life can we do this. The only drawback I can see is something we have spoken about in other posts. The more self aware someone becomes, they more reluctant they are to hurt others. Leaving oneself open for that part of our nature to be abused by others are are not self aware or have empathy in the same way.
Really interesting post Robert.
