HI Multi... why don't you share first your meaning of the word subconscious is to us? It is used differently in different teachings.
Does it include the unconscious? Is their a difference between what is called the subconsciousness and the unconsciousness? If there is, what is difference?
i posted the above then when back to forum and saw you expanded your post to include some of my question. going to read expanded version now.
Esoterically the pre-programing you are talking about was the evolutionary stages of humanity we went through over vast periods of time on multidimensional levels of consciousness. Just because we are not conscious of something happening inwardly or outwardly within us "As Yet" does not make it non-intelligent... but again we may have different meaning of word intelligent.
if it exists it has a "spiritual" component -- is anything inherently non-spiritual at some level of its being?

Hi Multi..
here is my two cents and some of my understanding of theses states of consciousness as of now.
The personal subconscious is a vast sea of consciousness - holding instincts and remnants of past learnt properties and experiences (holder of past evolutionary learning), both of a beneficent and also not so beneficial processes so called ego animal instincts). It mostly happens unconsciously to most people and is an Inherent part of human consciousness, conditioned responses.
But as Multi said it also contains physical autonomic activities like breathing and eating etc etc and such to keep us alive. It regulates unconsciously our autonomic nervous system. It is intelligent ( meaning that it is working under nature’s laws) but may be unconscious to our waking personality minds ... But as some yogi’s have shown – they have learned to be conscious of their unconscious subconcious physical abilities,,, and can be buried alive, pierced with a knife and no blood comes out and other tricks of the "fakir" trade. Are those tricks real spiritual growth... that is question.
The more challenging part of this subconscious system it also hold our fears, selfish shadow thoughts etc etc.. It is the shadow aspect in Jungian psychology. But, it can also be linked spiritually with the collective unconsciousness within. That is why the symbol of the sea or ocean of consciousness is correlated to it... One can swim to the deepest dark seas or swim in consciousness to radiant levels of our being-- all within ourselves.
But the subsciousness can also be a very useful tool if used in conjunction with our waking conscious and superconscious parts of our nature. It brings to life which the mind and emotions dwell upon. Through the process of our active imagination and integrated higher will.
It seems to me as with many things of our personality and our ego... it can be used to make us grow or it can get us trapped and chained to illusions. So is it spiritual or not depends on it's use and intentions.
peace

Back in the 1920`s, a man call Napoleon Hill, interviewed all the most successful people of that period, Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie etc. He put together a course called, " The laws of success", outlining a set of procedures and philosophies, tried and tested that would lead people to successful lives. It is quiet astounding how some of these principles, mirror a spiritual path. One of these principles stated that when one human being joins in union with another, with the intent of both been in harmony as to the outcome and goal, a third and more powerful mind is created, this has led to all major businesses and corporations having boards of many people to brain storm, they called this third mind the mastermind. In Christian scriptures it is stated, " If two or more are assembled in my name, Iàm there with them".
The subconscious mind seems to be our own library and control center, governing all controls of bodily functions and all retained, learned and accepted beliefs. Many of these belief patterns do not serve us, it is these we try to remove and replace with positive patterns, in doing our own inner work.
The human mind is made of the logical mind and the subconscious [in Christian terms these have been seen as the devil [logical] and God[subconscious]. A gate keeper lives in the logical and determines that which is safe to let into the subconscious, the subconscious accepts everything as truth. The gatekeeper can be bypassed by certain means, repetition, chanting, prayer, meditation. Once a predominating theme has been established in the subconscious, the gate keeper will refuse anything that conflicts with said belief, and may result in a mental block.
Whatever is buried in the subconscious is what is played out in our reality, we may even be unaware of what is truly buried. The same must be said when we embark on a spiritual journey, that which we hold in the depths of our subconscious, will be played out. Napoleon Hill through various means tried to remove the damaging patterns and instill patterns of belief of the goal to be reached, on a spiritual journey we try to do the same.
The only problem been, we all hold fear, we all come from the ego mind, to begin our journey from this stand point we have already been led on a detour by the mind/subconscious. We think we are on the right path, the subconscious providing the all empowering hallucinations, and synchronisities, but anything that comes from ego will be led astray, coming from mind is subject to mind.
It is this I refer to as lock down, it seems, to start on the right path, one must be there already. The merest subtleties of I, are enough to cause detour.
The big question lies, in , is there anything beyond the subconscious, or is it all levels of mind.

The Rosicrucians seem obsessed with the number three but that is because we think everything is manifested by the combination of two dissimilar things. At the intersection can be found something more then the sum of the parts. Even the Trinity i.e. " Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost " is actually just a way of metaphorically saying this.
As I understand there is a conscious and subconscious mind but also a third. Things like your metabolism and heart beat - actually your whole physical being - is under some sort of control. Only because the Cosmos itself is permeated by the thing we call LIFE. Actually LIFE and LOVE could in this case be said to be interchangeable.
To know this things at one level is very academic. But at another level it helps to know where things are coming from to try to understand and eventually manipulate them. Plus to think everything in the Cosmos is mirrored in us and vice-versa. That means if and when we understand ourselves we also understand all and become Masters.
