Yet another federal holiday in the colonies. So I won't be getting my mail Monday I guess. Seems to be some celebration of the guy that discovered us. Well actually my ancestors came from Europe - notably Scot Land or Russia - so maybe it is more the guy that gave us some escape route. It was getting a bit stuffy in the Old World.
Christopher Columbus is becoming very controversial of late. I thought he was just an explorer but silly me he was more of a empire builder. Or maybe it was just his sponsors. Either way it was very hard on the original inhabitants of the New World to be invaded by all the new colonists. The Natives did not have a chance! What few survived lost their culture and their very identity. To say the least life in the North and South America was never the same after Columbus came.
This was very tragic or very sublime depending on what culture you identity with but on an individual level it was double or more. Which leads to an interesting question. For so many years the Natives in America just lived and died and did little more. If they could have been isolated in theory would their civilization be any different now? Would teepee's still stand on the ground occupied now by the Empire State Building in downtown New York? Would bows and arrows be the latest weapon technology in a country that in real life pioneered splitting the atom for war purposes?
Even more to the point is the fact the Native Americans never were able to come together as a united nation whereas the colonists did and built one of the most powerful countries on Earth. It is hard to imagine the destiny of this planet with out the U.S.A. And yet most Indians here back then only had contact with the white settlers and never realized the big cities with huge numbers of people behind all that.
As above so below. When I feel crushed or useless I think of the march of progress of the human race and realize how utterly immense it all is. There are things and powers beyond my comprehension. As students of the occult we must accept this. Even vile or horrific events have in retrospect some meaning and some learning experience. If only we knew. But we do not. What we should know is we are not on our own. All is for a purpose. We are just along for the ride.
Even if it sometimes makes our life miserable in the short run ....
