The answer is very long and complicated and also depends on exact word definitions. But to try to put it very simply: there is something that animates us we call SPIRIT. It has a mind of it's own but can only do so much in any one body it inhabits.
There is something much more complex we call SOUL but it involves multi faceted stages of fragmentation and then assimilation. It is eventually NOT as separate as we think it should be.
The Spirit looks to the Soul to understand what it is and that process seems never ending. But that is another story for another time.

HI Spiritme
welcome to posting on forum. Clicked on your name to discover we are both have April 11 birthdays! welcome fellow Aries.
Here is my short answer == To me in how one uses the two terms they are different from the Esoteric point of view. Spirit to me IS Universal and Absolute - IT IS the Oneness which is alive within everything. Symbolically it is the Father archetype who art in Heaven.
Soul is an evolving part of consciousness ( correlated more with Feminine Mother principle archetype)... in a Person it is so much more then the personality we have in any one life.. it is culmination of all we have learned over many lifetimes and is still growing and evolving. Souls are made up of Spirit. Our Soul is the Higher Self within us.. intergrading our personality with our Soul Consciousness and wisdom is the first awakening stage of the Spiritual path.. eventually when we have totally awaken to Soul Consciousness we must move deeper and deeper into Spirit ( a paradox) which was always there in one sense. We awaken to who we Really Are. Saying that and truly experiencing it are two different states of Being.

Hi Spiritme,
To make the thing more complicated, English is not my first language, so it's kind of hard for me to discern the difference. Anyway, let's say that there are mind, soul and spirit. Whether soul or spirit is in the higher level is not the issue here (as Ace pointed out, "the two terms are different from the Esoteric point of view."). But for the sake of saying, let's say that spirit is the highest one. Soul is the higher consciousness than ordinary mind. Psychic abilities and spiritual abilities are exist and have some proof. (To make a long short, I'll skip about it here). As for spirit, it's the higher level than soul. I read somewhere (by Timothy Conway) and would like to quote it here:
As for me, I think soul is like love while spirit, hope. Yes, every mind (consciousness) needs something more abstract, love. Anyway, a man still can live without love but not without hope. And hope is more complicated than love.

Go deep enough, and there is a bedrock of truth, however hard.

Hi all, From a Christian point of view, There are three levels, the lowest level, is the carnal or flesh level, where man is controlled by the desires of the flesh.
The soul is the intermediate, between the flesh and spirit. When the soul is activated or awakened, man begins to think for himself, and becomes aware of his actions. At this point he can still be influenced more by the desires of the flesh, or overcome desire, allowing soul to govern the carnal desires. It is from this point, he can reach for higher understandings and through purification (internal work ), prepare a place for spirit to enter.
Spirit is seen as the highest and most sacred.
Depending on whether you believe in a power of good only, or good and bad, the soul level is seen as the most vulnerable, where we can easily be misled through ego.
There viewpoint states, that spirit can never enter the state of consciousness at the carnal level, and only at the upper end of soul level. Therefore spirit cannot be in anyone ruled by desires of the flesh, alcoholics, drug addicts, sex offenders etc.
They claim the soul level, is the preparation ground for spirit, led astray, it leads to actions of boastfulness, arguemental, the need to be right, a sense of importance, etc.
Spirit level, is the level at which spirit can enter, it leads to peace, compassion, desire to serve God, selflessness, humbleness, honesty and integrity.
Though it is seen that one can slip from one level down and back up again, spirit can never fall to the level of carnal consciousness.
I read all this a while back, hope I have recalled it correctly, the book was on Christian spirituality, which I feel explains things quite beautifully, and explains many more aspects of spirituality in fine detail, I was led to believe it was a modern interpretation by the content, and was quite stunned to learn it was printed in the 1940's.

hi Spiritme.. so sorry to hear your not feeling well... hope it passes quickly:)
I and a few others who come to chat here have found the book "Journey of Souls" by Dr Michael Newton on life between lives very insightful on the subject of what happens to us after death. What our forms are like after we leave our physical body, the multi-leveled nature of consciousness, different beings have a slightly different experience depending on one's Soul growth etc etc
You can find a PDF file of book on-line if your interested in exploring it.
