Questions for Reiki healers

Carnivàle (TV series 2003–2005) was one of my all time favorite movies. There were only some good movies about hand on healing and Carnivàle was one (if not the best) of them. Even it was only a movie but watching its healing scenes could make me felt really good and absorbed the powerful energy. So not to mention what the real healing can do.   

Summary: While driving down a desolate highway in rural Utah, Ben (our reluctant hero/healer) came across Jonesy and Libby. Jonesy was the victim of a vigilante group. He was tarred and feathered and left to die painfully. Finally Ben decided to try to heal Jonesy.

My questions:
1. Is it true (like in this movie) about the law of giving and taking? To heal this one, it might mean to hurt/harm that one at the same time? (This was why Ben hesitated to heal at first. It might hurt Libby).
2. I know you channel from the universal energy, but have you ever felt tired/exhuasted just after giving your healing?
3. Did your clients/patients dance like the man in the movie after they were healed? :-)

Hi Monty,

That is a blast from the past. My partner and I watched it about four or five years ago now. It was shown on Sky Atlantic. It was one of our most favourite programmes too. So much symbolism, so many layers to the story and the characters. It was shown here all as one series. I believe it was 2 series in one. We read that there was supposed to have been a third, but it was cancelled. Much to our disappointment. We felt there was definitely more mileage left to it. For those people who have not seen Carnivale, the healing element, though a major part of it, is not all it's about. It's set in the time of the American Depression and as the title suggests centred around a traveling Carnival. It's extremely atmospheric, and at times dark. In the beginning it is a little heavy going. But perservere, as I promise you, you will be hooked. Its about the battle between good and evil. The main characters are deep and earthy. It shows the many facets of man/woman. Teaches you how easily we can be decieved by outer appearances and to look deeper; How we are all flawed by, but are also redeemed by our humanity. How we are shaped by our environment as much as our upbringing, and that no matter what our character and background, we all have the potential to go one way or the other. That even in the darkest hours, there is always light.

Ben was a reluctant healer, and much of the early part of the series was spent dealing with his feelings towards what was happening to him, and trying to understand it. I can understand how you felt good watching him healing others. How many of us would if we could love to be able to alleviate the suffering of others, with a touch of the hand. In the series though, when he healed, there was always an opposite effect. As you said, he did not channel the healing energy from an infinite supply, as reiki/energy healers do. But he 'took it' from the life force around him. For example, when he healed the man in the crop field. He knew that the healing worked by syphoning off the life force of other living things. So he had to get as far away from people, animals etc as he possibly could. When the healing was complete, everything in the field around them had died.

Symbolically though, one can look at this as cause and affect. Or the implications of stepping in and altering someone else's life path. As a healer, it is important to understand the part that karma plays in relationship to a persons life circumstances. And the illness can be an important part of this. For many reasons that I know as a Buddhist you will understand. So before channeling healing, we also ask that 'this person receives healing that is for their highest good'. The intent is that they receive whatever they need. Expressed in this way, we cannot interfere or alter anything, that we are not meant to. We are there to aide their progress, not hinder it, no matter how well intentioned our motives are. There is a school of belief that feels that if we try to change something that is not meant to be changed, we will take on that other persons karma. I personally believe that we are there to help, if we were not meant to help, we would not be there. Simple as that.

A reiki/spiritual/energy healer connects to the universal healing energy. This comes from all around us and from spirit. When done correctly, the healer opens up and acts as a conduit. As they channel the healing energy, they too also receive energy. There is no depletion, in fact quite the opposite. The healer often feels incredibly rejuvinated. However, some people do feel tired after giving healing. This happens because through the healers inexperience, they inadvertently use up some of their own life force. They give of themselves. Mentally they are not understanding that 'they' don't have to do anything. Just allow it to flow through. By 'thinking' they have to help it, focus or direct it, they are in affect, 'getting in the way'. Impeding the flow. So they feel they have to push it through. I hope this makes sense to you. I can only speak for myself, but when I first started channeling healing energy. The biggest lesson for me was learning to 'let go' and understand that in healing, there is no 'I'.

I have never had a client dance after healing. But I have seen clients leave smiling, happy and relaxed. Full of enthusiasm and optimism. Something that was missing when they first arrived. They come not knowing what to expect. Not sure what is going to happen. There is relief that nothing odd is occurring. There is awe and amazement at some of the things that do happen. At knowing that it is a very real phenomena. People need hope. They need to know that there are things that happen that cannot be explained in a logical way, but that doesn't mean that they do not exist. It can be a very emotional and spiritual experience. And for many literally life changing, as it can motivate them to change their lives in extremely positive ways. And inspire them to begin their own spiritual journey.

I believe that physical healing is but the 'tip of the iceberg' Monty. The real healing begins at a much deeper level. In the heart, mind and the spirit. When those things are touched, the spark ignites peoples lives in ways we cannot possibly imagine. It is the beginning of their journey back to health. But the onus is also upon them to take responsibility for their own healing. If they are not willing to change the kind of lives they were living that brought them to the point where they needed healing from outside. Then no matter what good the healer does, they will eventually revert back to the state they were in.

Great post! I love it (even saved it for reading later). I knew you are good at spiritual writing but never thought you also are good at writing a review. You also should consider to write a book and/or movie review! I really enjoy reading it. :-)

As for the last paragraph, it reminds me something I read years ago. Even everyone needs love and to be loved but what people need more that is...hope.Though hope is frail it's hard to kill. Hope has something to do with believe! Here comes one of my favorite songs. (I like Celtic woman's version). And if I get it right, there was a line from Bible, too, right? "We were moving mountains, long before we knew we could"
