There is a saying that asks you to master yourself before you can master anything else. Do you believe that self mastery is important to be able to master life and the problems of life?

At this point in time I am forced to rely on the others for many things; in the wonderful world of spirituality it entails teachers and mediums and channellers and "sensitives". I can't help but notice the rules of engagement for me are not always the same as for the others. Which makes me wonder who or what I am dealing with. Isn't there but one G*d? Doesn't He treat everyone the same in the same way?
I think I am on to something. At one level there are constants in the Cosmos but at another level everything does revolve around me. To the extent it is my consciousness that makes it all real to me. In some ways everything is my own creation only limited by me and what I am.
So those that I seek for help are in a way just me but in an advanced state. They should not be considered all that different. The only barrier is time. I can't go forward in time but I can work out my karma in the present. To do that means to master every lesson and stop doing things I will later regret. To say you can do anything when given the chance also implies by trial and error you will NOT do things you know will not work. It is not easy to master the will to not be self destructive. Everything in the physical cries out for self preservation and selfishness.

Everything in the physical cries out for self preservation and selfishness. I agree and I used to do this myself. I feared everything after my experience. I wanted nothing more then to hold on to everything I've known and it only brought more fear. I've had to learn to die everyday, to say "Take it then!" In the face of fear. I don't know what awaits me on the other side but I will have to face it. I think it is possible to master yourself but in doing so you have to let go of everything, so really you master nothing. I still have a lot of work to do tho. In mastering yourself and not attaching yourself to anything I think you do master the problems of life because what's the problem?

I think in mastering self, you have mastered everything. People speak of the ego been stripped away, which can be a very frightening experience, it is a death, but only when the line has been crossed, is it known, that there was nothing to die. Attachments come in many varying degrees, can you hold a loved one in your arms, as life slips from them, knowing your sorrow stems largely from attachment to illusion. As the song says "it ain't easy".

As other have tried to do, I think the first step is to define what mastery of the self means or looks like. For myself, I understand it to be consciously participating in your relationship with all that is external to you.
Every technique, every tool used for development is being used to understand this relationship, whether consciously or unconsciously. Phrases and teachings such as this raise our conscious participation; but the participation is happening nonetheless.
