What is the cause of sorrow?
Sometimes, in the entire scheme of things in this world, we don’t seem to realize why sorrow was created.
Well, if this world were full of joy, bliss and happiness, then we would all truly forget God. It is sorrow that reminds us of our master, our creator, our God, otherwise most of us wouldn’t think of God at all. It is when there is a tragedy, when there is pain, when there is sorrow that the first thing we think of is God, because we don’t know what to do. We don’t know where to go. We have no solution to the problem; it is sorrow which makes us turn to God. There is a beautiful poem, which says that if we went to God without sorrow, then where would be the need for sorrow? Isn’t it true? So, sorrow has been created in this world so that we do not forget God.
On the other hand, if one were to look at it, the moment we remember God, we realize God and we become one with God, sorrow disappears. There is no need for sorrow, because we realize we are the divine spirit, the atman, the soul.
The pure nature of the soul is to be fearless, worriless, immortal and once we realize that we are the divine spirit and the soul, then where is the question of sorrow? We get into a state of sat chit anand or a divine bliss that comes from the knowledge of the truth that we are consciousness. Therefore, we must understand the root cause of sorrow and we will be full of joy.
