For the spiritual aspirant, what is important is that he is detached. He is not attached to anything. Does it mean that a spiritual aspirant has to live a boring life without love and laughter, without fun and joy? Of course not, there is a difference between love, laughter, fun, joy and being attached. When you are attached you become dependent on the attachment. You have expectations from that attachment and these dependencies and expectations create misery. They create connections on samsara – the world and these pull us down and stop us from liberation, freedom, nirvana, moksh, mukti. The challenge of life is very clear - not to be attached, to be free. The challenge of life is not to stop loving but to love universally, to love as the soul, to laugh without any expectations. There is nothing wrong in enjoying this beautiful world, which is actually a myth, an illusion, but what is wrong is getting attached to this world, getting attached to properties, things, people and relationships. These are the things that bind us down. Instead of us being in yoga - union with God, we are in samasara. We get attached to the world and getting attached to the world is not the right thing for a spiritual aspirant. The one who wants to go on a spiritual path, onward, upward, forward, God-ward, for him, detachment. viragya is the key. One must live as the spirit, the atman, the soul and not the body. One must be aware at all times that they are part of the divine consciousness. Then this will give sat chit aanand; the aanand, that comes from the sat – the truth of chit - the consciousness that God is everywhere.
