Somebody asked a question, “What is the true meaning of Ananda? How is it different from Happiness and Joy? Ananda is a very different word.” It doesn’t appear in the dictionary because it is an expression of Joy, which is beyond Joy. Every Joy is tainted by sorrow; everything that makes you Glad also makes you Sad. But what is that Joy, Bliss that can be absolute, that is Ananda?
Ananda, therefore, differentiates itself from other Pleasures and Happiness and Joy by its unique quality of having no expectations. Once you get used to this idea of living without expectations, well it may take some initial discipline and challenge, then you reach a state where you seek nothing and because you seek nothing, you cannot be hurt. There would be no unfulfilled expectations, there will be no disappointments, and therefore this state of being content without a craving, this state of being happy with whatever you have, this state of being full to the brim is Ananda.
Ananda is being grateful for who you are and what you have. Ananda is enjoying everything that is around you - the breeze, the trees, and the seas. Ananda is being able to love not just any person but love everybody and everything. Ananda come from the realization that the Divine Power of the Creator is within you, and the Divine Power, therefore, is not just within you, it is within everybody else. Not only within everybody else, but also it is in everything: It is in the clouds, it is in the skies and it is in every bit of consciousness. Everything that you open your eyes to, everything that you touch and feel, everything that you imagine have the Divine Power. The realization of this Divine Power being everywhere and everything, gives you this Ananda, which is an ultimate and absolute Bliss and Joy. It is beyond what happiness and pleasure can give you. Yes, there are material things, people, power and possessions that can make us happy but they can give only temporary Joy but whereas Ananda is unending Joy. It is everlasting Bliss, it is a Joy and Bliss that has no limit - it is limitless. Therefore, it is for us to be able to understand what this absolute Bliss is. It is Ananda!
