In the beginning the first communication was the WORD .... and Mercury is the Messenger to deliver it..
Mercury is the Roman name for this Planet and deity.....in Greek mythology it is so named Hermes. Mercury mythologically is a figure which has wings on its heels ( travel related symbol) and wings upon its head ( activity of the mind and thought). He holds in his hand the Caduceus - symbol of its ability to able to first create and then blend all dualities. Mercury is called the Messenger of the Gods. Mercury is not aligned to either the masculine or feminine energy polarity but is an amalgamation of both or neither.
Mercury is the symbol the of Waking Conscious Mind. It’s metal is Quicksilver. The two Astrological signs which are said to be ruled by Mercury are Gemini and Virgo – one an Air sign - the other an Earth sign. Mercury energy is changeable (mercurial) and moving, like our ever-changing thought patterns in most people unless one learns to mindfully or meditatively disciple one’s mind.
Some of the key principles which this archetype is connected with are Mental Thoughts, Communication and Travel. ( of all types and kinds of these activities – inwardly and outwardly) .
Mercury connected to mental thoughts is related to all areas of the mind and how we can use it. It deals with perception, reason, logic, the process and ability to figure things out, connected to reading, listening, understanding, comprehension and Memory.
The mind is a traveler that can be focused on very mundane facts and knowledge, can also travel into realms of the more abstract understanding, and lastly also take us into states of spiritual wisdom. It is up to us how and where we focus our attention. Spiritually the Mind can be a wonderful tool but ultimately a terrible master. Which relates to the spiritual axion - “The Mind is the Slayer of The Real”. Thoughts come to us from the world around us.... and also within us. Mercury deals with all forms of Communication -- the process of it and the means to do it. So it this light it has to do with Words, language, speech, writing, reading, books and all written material, or any forms in which we share information. It deals with the Memory of what we learn, with schools and education – teaching and teachers, and students, writers, and publishers of all sorts. Likewise in these days - Computers- e-mails, and facebook etc.
The mind can be both an Active or Receptive vessel for us. It is said more advance ways of communicating, like Telepathy and such will become more commonplace as human beings evolve. Mercury has to do with mental intensioin and the the esoteric understanding of Thought forms we create on other levels of conscious,
Travel of all kinds using all types of transports is another archetypical principle of Mercury.. We can travel physically, in many ways. We can also travel mentally through books and meditations. We can transported to many places within our minds. Even things like astral travel would also be under Mercury’s influence. Processes like navigation and maps also fall under the Mercury energy. Mercury is also correlated to our Nervous systems -- the way feelings and sensations travel through our physical and life force vehicles. Actually the correlation extends to all three Nervous systems - The Sympathetic, Cerebrospinal and the Etheric Nervous System. Each evolving and useful at their own pace within us.
