In my esoteric understanding Maya has more to do with a relative illusion, because everything in an Illusion relative to the Absolute Unified Spirit. Would you call all of life negative?

Maya is also connected to Sleep but a symbolic sleep which is opposite to being Awake or Awakened,,,ie the term Buddha is not a person but is a state of being and is called the Awakened Consciousness.

Symbolically Maya or in other stories Mara is correlated to the force which is called “the devil” in western myths. That karmically entraps us to the material and personality planes in the continuing journey of life’s and death’s connected with attachments and forms on all level of consciousness.

Most of us are trapped in Maya to some degree... it's called life.
