Hi,
I have recently been struggling with a short attention span. I have started a course that I can work on while I am at home. However I can't focus on one task for more than 10/20 minutes. I just seem to want to do 100 things at once. I love to learn new things, it's my passion. I have been mediating using one of deepaks guided audios and i have also started doing yoga everyday. Everything iv read seems to point in the direction of exercise and meditation to help clear the mind. How ever I havnt felt a change. It's effecting me alot with everything I do. I feel like I have a lack of motivation to pursue things. So I was wondering if anybody has any other advice that may help me to focus more?

Hello, awakenwithin I''m Mary Anne, and I have had a Lot of trouble focusing and concentrating in my life! (Goodness knows how many things I have started and then Not finished in my life due to lack of attention and focus!) I now meditate, too, and I have found that with meditation - like All daily activities - it helps to do it at the Same time every day in order to receive a full benefit of its transforming energy. I find the more I Do at certain times a day - a routine - the more I am able to concentrate on each thing because my mind just becomes more Comfortable of the schedule - like I am Expecting to do "this", so I slowly stop focusing on everything Else I could be doing at that time. For meditation times I have taken to choosing certain music to help me - calming music, but also certain wavelengths and binaural or isochronic rhythms....I think each person has his or her Own pace, Hz, tone and rhythm that works best for them, and it may Change with time, but experiment with different music to see which ones help you become calm and focused! If you are interested in crystal energy to help you, I have found positive focusing energy from flourite, selenite and jasper (those are fairly easy to get). I hope that is helpful to you - welcome to the God Light Mary Anne

HI awakenwithin ... i would say give yourself some time,, don't expect perfection right away with doing meditation.. or actually don't have any expectations when doing meditation .... you could try mindfulness meditation or practices of focusing more on everything your doing during your day.
You didn't say how long you have been practicing meditation? Or what type of meditation your have been trying? Do you practice aligning your breathe with your mind?
Over time we create a pattern within ourselves when one meditates regularly. Making meditation more powerful and focused I have found.
just my thoughts on your question

Hey guys,
Thank you so much for replying!
Mary Anne - You said about sticking to meditating the same time everyday. This makes sense to me. My meditation times have been all over the place to be honest. Its difficult to find the right moment of the day where i can grab some time to my self, without the distractions. I will defiantly make a set time every day for this. You also said about experimenting with different music. Any advice to get me started?
Aceofcups - Cool name by the way! I have been meditating pretty much every day now for the last month and a bit. Its a guided audio. I dont exactly know alot about meditation but it has something to do with chakras. I agree, giving it time is defiantly something i should do. You said about practicing aligning my breathe with my mind, what do you mean by this?
Thanks again for your help, i really appreciate it.

HI awakenwithin,
Yes, doing meditation on a regular time schedule really can be effective way of creating a vibration space in your conscious,, and your Higher and more aware self will know that it is the time you have set aside to do meditation and work with you at that time period.
Here is a very basic meditation which aligns one breath with your awareness.... it is to put your focus of attention at the tip of your nose while you watch and slow down your breathing. Slowly breathing in and slowly breathing out. Try doing that in silence, your mind may wander at times, that is natural for most people,,,, but then gently without being critical with yourself bring it back to the focus at tip of nose. It is basic practice but can be a very effective way to meditate and focus one's mind.
One must pick one type of meditation practice and give it a month of doing it to get the full benefits of the practice.

I'm glad you are enjoying the new practices you have found (meditation, yoga) Ace's method is a tried-and-true one so you may want to try it for a while, see if this and being consistent help you Focus better! As far as music goes you can start a playlist from youtube, as you have Time, of meditation music (just type 'meditation music' into youtube) that seems to Resonate with you - how it makes you feel Inside...does it calm you, help you think? That way you can have a list at-the-ready should you want to use it You might also work in five or ten extra minutes before your meditation time listening to music that you Know calms you and gets you thinking about peaceful, positive, spiritual things...you know - don't try to go straight from listening to head-banging music into your meditation time! lol There are some good musics in the Spiritual Music Library here on the GL that you can listen to, to see what others around here are enjoying

Hi awakenwithin,
I forgot to say... some people feel that meditation on the chakras can activate energy and make one more hyper instead of making one focused and integrated and centered (unless your a long term meditator and have practiced with chakra meditations with ample instruction).
In the end --You have to find out what works best for yourself,,,,, some types of new age meditation music Solfeggio Harmonics music gives me a terrible headache and an unpleasant experience. But others find it useful.
For myself I usually like to do meditation in silence, so I can hear more of the inner sounds within as I align.

That is the task we are all struggling with.
It is the way of the mind to be busy, busy. To focus your attention puts the mind out of its task, to be busy and crazy!
So, it comes with training.
Just like to be a great dancer, you would first have to take some classes, learn from some teachers, and practice. Then you see yourself improve, with a lot of daily, constant practice.
The mind is no different.
Train it, day by day, to sit still, and do one task at a time.
1 day it is 10 minutes. The next day aim for 12 minutes. Then 15 minutes. Take little steps, just keep monitoring, and setting the goal, "today, I will sit for 2 minutes longer than yesterday". Or 10 minutes, or 30 minutes longer.
Monitor yourself over 6 months, or a year, and watch the improvement.
Do not become discouraged or frustrated. It is a natural thing, and a natural progression. With practice, and patience, you can train your mind to sit still with one task at a time.
Then, you can be the master of your mind, instead of the mind mastering you.
Best wishes, may you be successful in this task, and may you have the patience to see it out, and the self love to persevere.
Love,
Anandamayi

Hi aceofcups,
If I could offer anything useful, it would be to understand the principle - that when you concentrate on anything with one pointed attention, the mind cannot wander at the same time. It is one or the other.
So that can be applied to all practices, knowing the aim to concentrate on one thing at a time, for as long as possible, and keep coming back to it as the mind wanders.
To ensure you get the right instruction and guidance, look for an enlightened spiritual master. This is a must if you truly want to improve, move forward and transform.
Only a spiritual master can guide you there, as the master is the only one that is already there themself!
So have fun, enjoy, and to come home to yourself, find the one who is already home in themself, completely, and ask them to help you.
Love Anandamayi
