(I was going to reply to Angelfaith's post but don't know where to click reply. hahaha!
So, I have to start a new thread here, then.)
Hi Angelfaith,
As a DonQ (Don Quijote/Quixote), “The Impossible Dream” always inspires me. :-)
As a real man behind the handle of “DonQ”, this song always make me have a bit tears. Hahaha.
It’s from a classic movie, Man of La Mancha (1972, directed by Arthur Hiller.)
Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren were so great in this film.
(I don’t know how to embed the link here. Anyway, the link is below)
Even new singers song it as they are trying to be (literally) stars/famous singers, it’s still pleased to hear.
As for me, why does it have deep spiritual meaning? Ok, let me explain in detail.
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
When I chose to walk on my spiritual path, 30 years ago, it was like I was dreaming the impossible dream.
I had so many questions. Had so many doubts in myself. Why on earth I didn’t chose to walk the normal (worldly) life
as normal people did? Why did I have to trouble and burden myself more?
Even struggling to survive was more than exhausted.
But…who is my unbeatable foe? Yes, my ego, myself, me! Spiritual path helped me to deal with that very foe.
As it’s said in Buddhism/Taoism, “To beat/overcome the others is strength. To beat oneself is enlighten/insight.”
Yes, maybe I will never completely overcome my ego, but it has less and less power on me.
Spiritual path has helped me to bear with unbearable sorrow.
(urh…even I still hesitate to go to the place where the brave dare not you. After them, please! )
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
Hmm…this reminds me of that boy, one candidate for Britain’s got talent. He commented about the movie, Mission Impossible,
“If it’s impossible, why don’t just stay at home?”
To right “the improbable wrong” may be more realistic, for the sake of that boy. :-)
Ok, a bit serious here. I’ve learnt from my experience that it’s a spiritual wrong to try to right any wrong.
(What will happen if I try to cut a caterpillar to help that little butterfly to come out? Sure, it will die, right?)
This doesn’t mean I have to stop trying to do the right thing. No, it just means I have to be very careful to do it.
To right the wrong things need the very right time to do so. This is very very important!
Besides, Most of the time I thought I was right, I was wrong. Then, why do I try to right the (already) right things?
It was just my ego trying to do that.
“To love pure and chaste from afar” needs the deepest love. Yes, spiritual love.
“To try when your arms are too weary” needs spiritual courage.
As mother Teresa said, “Do it anyway.” Do the right thing even no one will understand you.
“To reach the unreachable star” needs wu-wie, action without expectation.
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause
And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star
Yes, maybe the world will be a bit better if I also take my little role, trying to do the right thing.
We cannot grow the whole forest at once but only a single tree at a time, right?
Walking on the spiritual path I’ve got so many scorns and scars. Do I ever regret about it?
No! Because…I still got the same amount of these scorns and scars anyway.
Or worse than that, maybe I would get more than I got now. And…urh… I’m not that brave.
Getting scorns and scars without spiritual background would be so unbearable and very hurtful. Hahaha!
