I've been doing a guided meditation this week, and after meditating, my dreams seem to be particularly vivid. This is just one of them. The memory of the dream seems to have stayed with me, which I often think is an indicator that the dream is significant.
I dreamed that my husband and I were taking a long walk together. At the end of the walk, we were both going to work, separately. The walk was longer than I anticipated and we reached a point where I realised that there was still quite a distance to go. I was worried that my husband was exhausted, so I told him that he must take a taxi and not walk any further. I left him with his phone and taxi fare, in a place where he could be picked up easily, and travelled on alone.
My first visit was to an elderly lady and her carer. I was there to check on their welfare and give them any help and advice that they might have needed. When I arrived, all was well. They told me that they had found somebody to help them with their paperwork. This person was charging them £32.50. I was initially a little concerned, as I had always done it for nothing. But then I realised that this was legitimate and that I shouldn't undercut them by working for free. I realised that it was also a relief to not have to do this any more, as I no longer had the time for that sort of work.
Before I left, the lady who was the carer told me that she had some instructions for me, for my next visit, which was to an elderly lady who lived alone in a castle. She told me it was important for me to have those instructions, because the pathways that led to her home were high and steep, and there were open bridges with big drops below them, and I needed to know how to negotiate them. I told her that actually, I was afraid of heights, and that in the past, when confronted with a steep drop, I had been known to freeze and to be unable to go any further. She listened, but did not comment. She handed me the paper with all the instructions written on them. I felt that their goodwill came with me, and had a feeling of completion. These ladies no longer needed me; somebody else was looking after them now, but they appreciated what I had done for them in the past.
I left their house and started to look for the castle. I saw a signpost saying 'Beautiful Medieval Castle and Fortress'. I was puzzled as I didn't think it could be that easy, and wondered if there could be two such places in the same area. But I realised that there was only one, and followed the pathway indicated by the sign.
I found myself at the foot of a set of steep steps, but the staircase was enclosed and safe. I looked up and saw a platform. Part of the castle was on the platform. I could see that extensive renovations were going on, and there was scaffolding and wire netting around the building. It was high but did not look dangerous. I felt safe.
I realised that my journey would take me beyond the platform, and that the place I was looking for may well be reached by crossing open bridges and walking along pathways on the sides of steep mountains and hillsides. The platform was not my final destination. It was, however, a safe place to start. I started climbing. I was no longer afraid.
