A couple nights ago I was invited to a party. Well actually a multi-culture celebration fund raiser. Feeling thouroughly rotten I thought it would be good therapy to go out and let everyone see how bad I felt. The weather here of lately is hard if not devastating to heart patients.
Mostly I hugged the dog Tag and refused the BBQ dinner. There was some acorn food prepared by a family recipe. It was bland and tasteless but I sampled it and I immediately felt better. I did wash it down with a small baq of Fritos. At one point the Native Americans were chanting and bouncing around. I think that is how they bond with each other: acorns and dancing and bouncing. People like me get to go to their Casino at Soboba - " a good place if you like smokey air and want to lose your money ".
You can look up California Indians and acorns but I got to taste the real thing from the source! The night air was warm and balmy and it wasn't hard to imagine the tribe sitting outside having fun staring at the sky. I could hear the horse next door. I am glad I went. I need desparately to escape but there is only so much fantasy available.
Well the reality is grim: not a lot around here survived over the years but the recipe and techniques for acorns has not been lost. Add a few slices of avocado and I think you could live quite well. Although I admit coming home to electricity and running water and above all my oxygen concentrator keeps me alive too.
Acorns !
