I just finished reading Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Dr Eben Alexander. Dr.Alexander, a prominent neurosurgeon who had trained at Harvard University, has written a fascinating book about his near-death experience (NDE). At the age of 54, he contracted a severe form of E. Coli meningitis, which aggressively attacked his brain cortex, or the portion of the brain that supplies conscious, and conscious rational thought. The disease he contracted was a very rare one. He slipped into a coma for a week, his fellow doctors said he would not live or be a vegetable if he returned to waking consciousness. Dr. Alexander describes his Near Death Experience and his return to life - a life now filled with love and a new sense of gratefulness.
While Dr. Alexander's experiences have some similarities to other near-death experiences and some are a bit different. What sets his book apart is the fact that Dr. Alexander was a neurosurgeon with credentials of the working of the brain from a scientific point of view. His brain was not functional at the time he experienced his NDE and he realized that consciousness is so much more then just our brain functions. He was a man of science and a skeptic, who changed his views completely after experiencing this life altering journey. This transformation is interesting and notable. His descriptions of heaven are vivid, uplifting, and fascinating.
A book worth reading!
