Herkimer Diamonds are actually a form of double- terminated quartz. The name, "Herkimer" is derived from the place of their greatest abundance: Herkimer, New York, USA.
They are so- named "diamonds", because they resemble diamonds with regard to their overall shape, which is very short in length in relation to their width. (They are slightly longer than they are wide, typically.) They tend to be small- typically about a half inch in length or less, but can be as big as an inch in length.
In truth, "Herkimer Diamond" is a marketing label. Similar diamond- shaped quartz crystals can be found elsewhere- such as Tibet, for example. And they can be found in the Smoky variety.
At any rate, such stones, when clear and non- smoky can serve to bring mental processes better into focus. For this reason, I suspect, it is not uncommon to find "Herkimer Diamond" types of stones set in wire- wrapped jewelry.
A very good use for such stones is to put them in your pillow to help with dream recall.
Another way to use them is to gently put one somewhere on a client when they are laying down during crystal healing and in a REM state. Doing so will help them gain better clarity of visions they may be having at the time.
NOTE: Danburite crystals tend to have a similar effect, but not as pronounced.
