Obsidian in general is a type of volcanic "glass". In other words, it's the result of lava flows. There are many types of Obsidian. As Kaz pointed out, one is "Apache Tears". Others include SnowFlake Obsidian, FireWorks Obsidian and Rainbow Obsidian, among others. There is even a green- colored Obsidian that has been named, "Helenite", which resulted from the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, in the U.S. several years ago. Rainbow Obsidian (so named due to the "rainbow effect" of the various bands of color that reflect in direct light) is an excellent "second chakra" stone. In other words, it works very well when applied to the Second Chakra area- basically, above the pubic area, at the bladder. What it excels at is helping to sort through layers of emotional issues. Best use is when the person is laying down, face up. Allow to remain that way for about 20 minutes.
