Today, the Church of England decides whether women should be bishops. The decision has been made and it was a No. What are your thoughts on this.
If you're a Christian, can you explain why this is such a thorny issue for the Church of England? And if you're not, what impact does it have on wider debates about gender equality?

As long as men and women have sepperate jobs or sepperate stations in sociate, we as a the human race will not awaken. It is a product of our being in duality consciousness and in an a sleep state. All must be respected, all must be nurished, all must be treated equally, and all must be allowed to follow their vision and purpose in this life if we are to awaken. If a woman can not be pope then they do not know the teachings of their own master, they have become the dark that they fear so much.

I am not a Christian .. i am a Hindu .. But just like Bishop we have hindu Pujari in temples. Yes women are not Pujari in a temple mostly in big temples .. thats true.. when it comes to gender equality ... we always say "siya ram " i.e. we always respect Godess sita (siya) more than Ram .. and ladies are respected more than gents.. But the question is not about comparing man and woman ... but the question should be how compatible man and woman are ? Both man and woman are different. lets say both do a different job.. but how much compatible both are that makes the world a better place.. its not about that if man can drink coffee and woman can drink too .. or if women makes tea then men should make too... its about if there is no tea and no equipments to make tea available nearby then can men and women together find the tea and with equipments can they together make a tea for the family.. That is compatibility. The one with a pure heart can easily make contact with God. no matter he is man or woman .. and no job is lesser or smaller either a nun or a bishop.. I am not eligible to comment on "Should women be bishops?" because i am not a christian and i know very less about christianity but i can surely say that one who does not have hatred and pure and heart full of love can reach god easily and together man and woman can make this world a better place .. All are equal in eyes of God .. have a happy day charu

Well this is a bit awkward for me in as much as I tend to think girls are not as competent as boys. Girls go through all the motions but things don't get done; when it breaks down it is easier for girls to roll their eyes and call for help.
The trouble is the myth of the superiority of the white male race is just that: a ruse to eliminate the competition. The natural order of things is that nobody, male or female or anything in between, will do more then is necessary. Some groups and subgroups will usually try harder though and I don't expect that to change in anybodies life time. So no matter what you do you are going to find a lot of Oriental male scientists with a lot of cute female secretaries.
But the minute that becomes compulsory you are also going to have a lot of incompetent people all over everywhere just because their jobs were locked in by race, religion, or gender! The thought has occurred to me even my presence may have been a challenge to the others at times but that is another story. Or maybe not.

I was thinking about this just last night. I'm not a Christian myself but from my point of view I think that all they can do is keep trying if they feel it is so important, after all they were only beaten by a few votes.
In a Spiritual sense I believe that men and women should by way of complimenting each other acheive equallity.
I have recently read a quote by a guide in Spirit who basically says, all relligion is service so in that sense who needs a church at all ?

I myself believe that women should be allowed to be Bishops. I have no problem with Women doing most jobs. After all some Women are more men like than some of us men. This is not a question about gender, it is about competence to do a job. If a woman is better, then she should be given the job. I do not agree with putting token people into jobs, just to even up things. People should get where they get on merit.
I feel the church should keep evolving, it is probably a bad idea to change everything overnight, but after ten years or so, we have got used to women Vicars etc, that period of time has broken down barriers. People are getting used to women having greater roles in churches, so they should keep moving with this. Like I said if they just abolished all the rules overnight, that would probably upset too many people, do it methodically over short periods of time, and the majority will get used to things.

Hi kaz... I do hope that one day women are allowed to become bishops. The church is very traditional and change occurs very slowly. I agree with Leon, that changes that are introduced slowly to give people the idea to get used to it is the best way. The older generation will always resist it I think. One day though a new generation will have its say.
Blessings Ruby
