I have been told that that i am seeking to be austare because i am afraid of God and want to fulfill desires. i was also told i need to be austere for the sake of piety. i can't find a good definition of piety or how i should be. i want to be loving and bring healing to the table. i want to be a truly good person, but i am so lustful.

Hi Jessie, The word piety is used to describe a state of respectful devotion. You can be pious in your reverence and respect for God. In Chinese culture, people hold the same thoughts about veneration and respect of their parents, family elders and ancestors. I tend to think of Nun's, Monks, Priests as being pious, especially those who are sequestered away from the world. A pious man to me would be someone who is quite austere and lives a very simple and god fearing life. I feel Piety also conjures up an image of respect being tinged with fear. A healthy respect at the very real thought of God's wrath being brought down upon your head if you transgress or sin. Of course this is just one perception of God and quite a strict view. I hasten to add not mine and I am trying not to generalise, just sharing what thoughts the word piety evokes in me. I see God as being the source of unconditional love, I have never felt afraid of him and still retain a sense of awe and respect but without the fear bit. Lustful means: Intense eagerness or enthusiasm for life. Considering how long you have been away from the world Jessie, it is no wonder you feel lustful, and in the truest sense of the word. It is perfectly natural. You are a passionate man Jessie and a kind one, don't try to change who you are. These are admirable qualities, bring those to the alter of God when you pray, they are no less important. Remember those words 'to thine own self be true'? Better to be a honest man with a full heart, then a pious one trying to be something you are not. Love and light Kaz

sad but true: some things are easier to define by citing their opposites. Because the quiet and subtle are exactly just that.
Un-pious might be loud boisterous obnoxious; beyond having a good time to the point of letting those around you and for miles around know how utterly sensuous everything is. Assuming they were after the same non-stop pleasures. Or lacking in sensitivity to begin with. Nothing really wrong with that. It makes a good nightclub act. Cheers!
But is it suggested if and when your life goes kaput you might not find solace in that. A pious person might be able to keep you grounded untill the hurt was over. Because their lives are grounded on simplicity and morality and basic living.
