Spirit guides--real, imaginary, necessary? And how do you find a spirit guide, or does one find you? Do they speak directly to you or are they intuitive? Any thoughts?

Hi Dennis, This is a very interesting question, one many people ask, so thank you for putting it on here. I believe spirit guides are real. I believe, they choose us, they make the first move. Which might then beg the question, if they make the first move towards us, what is the point of trying to connect with them ourselves.
I believe, if we are drawn to thinking about or wanting to connect with our spirit guides, this is because we are responding to a intuitive call from them. Some people seem to have no problems seeing or hearing their spirit guides in a spontaneous way. Others, need to tune in, and to do this need to quieten down, so they can hear that inner voice.
How do they communicate with us? I think that depends on the level of our ability to tune in to their frequency or how receptive we are. It may be through the language of symbols, or through the vehicle of our dreams. For others it might be visual images, and some may experience it as listening to someone stood beside them speaking in their ear.
From my own personal experience, I have only twice had the experience of a guide being near me. Once was when I was healing and felt out of my depth. I was channeling healing for a person who unknown to me was severely depressed and a working medium. It was quite early on in my healing practice and naive, It never occurred to me that someone who was experienced at working with the spirit world, would do so when not well and in the process acquired some negative attachments in her aura.
As a healer, we open up to healing and connect with the auric energy of the recipient of that healing and so a two way corridor is opened up. I felt this deeply cold energy within her and slowly felt myself being overwhelmed by deep cold and heaviness. I was aware something wasn't right but didn't know what to do. So I asked for help. I was aware of this presence stood beside me, I felt the weight of a long cloak made of feathers being draped around my shoulders. I felt a surge of energy within me and I found myself straightening up, tall and strong. I believe this guide was my healing guide and came to help me and lend me their strength in that moment. I was able to complete the healing. I realise now, I didn't protect myself properly before doing the healing, I was wide open and vulnerable. It was a lesson I needed to learn, but I also trust and believe, if we are chosen to do this work, we are never without guidance and protection. Mine came when I needed it.
I was aware of a spirit guide helping me with some inner energy work of my own. I saw him two or three times, but except for one occasion always from a distance. He told me his name was Alphin or Alphun not sure which spelling is right. he said he would come whenever I needed him, but the choice would always be mine. He walked with a long staff and just seemed white.. not very descriptive I know but that was the impression I had. For some they see their guides very clearly for others it is a fleeting impression but a strong sense of their energy which is how it seems at this point in my development to work for me. My abilities mainly come through emotion, and energetic sensing, with occasional words and vivid images.
For a while a few years ago, I had a male guide beside me when I went through a phase of what you could call channeled or automatic writing. I do believe we go through phases of trying out different spiritual abilities. Some stay for a short while, others we keep with us and sometimes they come back at a later date. I would be interested to hear what others think about this.
Love and light Kaz
