Do self help books work? Has anyone ever read anything that has proven to be helpful, or some some words of wisdom in a book, that have turned your life around?

Well over the years I read quite a lot but mostly fiction or what I guess would be called "opinion" books. RAMONA by Helen Hunt Jackson was stunning because I never heard the "other side" before involving Native Americans. COMPULSORY EDUCATION by Paul Goodman was also amazing because it offerred a completely oposite view of education and why it was doomed to failure and explained to me what was happening to me at the time. These and some other works did give me a peice of the universe that I decided was true and helped to explain the puzzle of creation.
What I find troublesome is that more direct works on spirituality are just too close to the source for me. I read them and get very frustrated when I don't understand or can't find any way to use the teachings and usually wind up abandoning them. Only to revisit them years later when I have calmed down. Oddly - or mayby not so odd - I read Samual Clemmens as a kid and was impressed by his sense of morality. Odd because Mark Twain delighted in uttterly ugly scenarios. He woud not preach at you but would seemingly deliver to you the uglyness of the age all wrapped up in fun and games as if it was just normal life and times. You choked and fumed and wanted to protest! It was NOT right and how dare he postulate otherwise!
Actually it was sarchasm and reverse phycology. He wanted you to feel that way. But if he said it outright it would seem trite or juvenile or just plain sissy. That is the trouble with self help books. They seem too nice and almost insulting in their naivety.
I get more out of things not pretending to be spiritual but have an undeniable morally successfull slant that tells me some body somewhere is really in tune with what the Cosmos is and how it acts.

Communication is creation. It is how we share "ideas." Most books are illusion based so what stems from them must be illusionary. Most will use fragmented perceptions to witness to their truth, but there is only one truth.
There is only one book that I have read that is true. "A Course in Miracles."
