If reincarnation is true, is there a reason why most people are oblivious to what may have happened in a past life?
Is there reason why it is hidden from people's minds, or is there a more simple biological answer?

My dad died in 1998 and sense that day he has come back to visit my wife and I many times. There are some questions that he can answer for us and there are some questions that he will not answer for us. He says that we learn some very hard lessons during some lifetimes and some of the things that we do to others leaves us with paralizing sin and guilt. We need to move on to learn other lessons. This is also one of the reasons that we do not live as long anymore, we get stuck in our ways, and some times we do things that we just can not get over. We do not have the same values as a spiritual being that we have as a human being. Both of my parents started getting some past life memories right before they died. My dad told me that if we need those memories for some reason that we will be given acess to them as needed.

I think our past lives are probably cloaked in mystery is for our own protection and for survival in this lifetime. It's like something being locked away in a hidden room. You first need to know that there's a hidden room and where it's located and then you need to find the key.
I'm at the point where I know there's a hidden room somewhere, but I don't know where it is and I can't find the keys. Maybe part of me is a bit afraid of finding out. I've heard that for some people, their past lives were very painful and to unlock those memories would be like rehashing all of those old issues. Also, even if they were happy memories, we are here now for a reason and we need to be in the present as much as possible.
I feel like the only reason we would need to go back and discover the details of a past life is if there was some unfinished business that is affecting our current life. It's something I've been curious about for a while and there's a lot of synchronicity in my life in relation to this topic. So, I've come to conclusion that there's something I should know about my past life or lives that I don't know right now. I can't really force it though. I feel like when I'm ready, what I need to know will be revealed to me.
Thank you for this post Leon.
EDIT: As far as DNA is concerned, I know that DNA contains information and I'm guessing that could include memories. Maybe if our souls travel between different bodies, some information can get lost in translation. Often times, when I read about people who've had past life regression, their past lives seem to be across continents in diverse places and they seem completely unrelated to each other. There doesn't seem to be a continuous line or any pattern to it. I'm curious to know if anyone has ever reincarnated into a person that was related to them? Perhaps a descendent? How would that change things?

I wish I could remember what it is that I am to learn from a previous life and what mistakes I did in that life, so I can learn from it and not live it again and again and again...

A very interesting question Leon, and one I have thought about a lot over time, having a deep interest in past life or reincarnation as it is also called. I ask myself, why do some people have past life memory and remember their most recent life, or even earlier lives, while others have no memory of any past lives at all? Could the reasons that block those memories lie back in those past lives? Could the individuals own inability to face up to things in the past influence the ability to remember those past lives? If something very traumatic happens to you, would you want to remember it and think about it or would you rather forget it? This life, with this life's memories can be difficult enough to cope with. To have to carry along side all this and the memories and the feelings of past lives I believe would be too much for us. It would paralyze us, make it almost impossible to live in the present. I cannot think of anything more agonising to have to keep reliving parting from loved ones. Missing them desperately and knowing that somewhere there soul continues, albeit in a different form. How could we ever form new and fulfilling loving relationships, create new families without feeling guilty or disloyal about the partners, children we have left behind on our spiritual journey through time. I believe as Ish's father has said, if there is a situation in this life time, that for our spiritual growth requires being able to remember something from a previous life, then it will be made available to us. Though I do wonder what kind of situation that would be. Having said all of this though, I do believe we can access past life memories with the help of a professional therapist who specialises in regression. Dr Brian Weiss has written several books about Past Life experiences, his first book Many Lives, Many masters made a deep impression on me, so I can thoroughly recommend this for anyone who is interested in learning more about this fascinating subject. I wrote a poem about past life a few years ago and would like to share it with you. I hope those who have read it on the forum before do not mind me sharing it again, but it felt apt. When I look in the Mirror, what do I see is it my face or another, looking back at me I have longed for this moment dreamed of this time when I can rekindle that flame that's divine
Stretching out in front of me, out into infinity my life, my lives my soul journeys forward, striving yearning its core being drawn like a moth to the flame shuddering loneliness felt by the same
I follow the pathways set out before me as others have done so many times before me occasionally joy filled as my soul touches another one who is like me, part of me how that illuminates me, fills me with joy bereft am I when that light goes and I am alone
Star sprinkled sky, luminous light wait for me, I am coming home, maybe this night

The reason past lives are shrouded in mystery is because they are not our lives.
We need to let go of the idea that there is something that fully preserves our personal coherence beyond death. Energies, intentions, attitudes, etc, we have created may stick together because they arose together, but eventually move on and ultimately disperse.
Accept that you might live somebody elses past life and it is yours only because you say it is yours. On reflection this is probably a more true scenario than personal past lives. All of us live other people's lives to a greater or lesser extent, I don't think there can be doubt about that. Parents, culture, prevailing environmental and social conditions al exert their influcence on us.
We would have to ask to what extent is our current life really our life? Never mind past lives.

The reason past lives are shrouded in mystery is because they are not our lives. I've heard of that of several theories about past lives not being ours. Some were the usual "just products of our imagination" and others were that we were recalling someone else's life. I guess the idea is that everyone's connected and that everything that happened and once existed is still happening and still exists, so naturally you'd be able to reach out and capture someone else's memory. But the question is, if we are recalling them, are they random? I tend not to believe in randomness. I think everything happens for a reason, so if we are remembering pieces of someone else's life, then it must mean something. I've heard a theory that when we recall past lives, we are remembering our ancestor's lives. Or that the only lives we can "remember' are those of our ancestors. What would that mean, I wonder? In that case maybe I should be asking my father and mother about their great, great grandparents? Instead of a past-life regressionist, maybe I should go see an historian? I'm only half kidding Aside from that, even if the lives we are remembering are not ours or not anyone even remotely related to us, I feel that we are shown things for a reason and they're maybe a lesson in their lives for us to learn.

We would have to ask to what extent is our current life really our life? Never mind past lives. Regarding that question, why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't we ask questions about everything that interests us. Why remain in ignorance? If we keep going we may find that our preconceptions were false, but we will become wiser for it. Some people devote their lives to being astrophysicists and study celestial bodies billions of miles away, but one would never ask them, "Why are you studying the stars that are so far away from you, why don't you study what's here on earth right in front of you?" Of course, not... Sometimes you can learn what's inside of you by studying what is (or appears to be) outside of you. That's my take on it.

Lets' look at it in another way, how much control do we have over our life? To be able to say it is my life I would need significant control over what happens, and we do have control in what I call 'small' things. In the 'big' things we seem to little to no control. I don't think making decisions whether to get up a 8 or half past 8 in the morning is an indication for me living 'my' life. When I have a choice to get cancer or some other disease, and when I will die, that would be an indication of having control for me.
This is ignoring the many spiritual beliefs which essentially say that we have no control whatsoever and that free will is figment of our imagination.
Some New Age people are fond of saying everything is as it should be. This is essentially the same as saying we have no control over anything.
If we have no control in and over our life, whose life are we living?

There are some very interesting theories out there about cell & DNA memory. Which would explain some people's experiences of recognising ancestral family members. Or recognising buildings and places that have had significance in familial past. But how do you explain the memories recalled by people who remember a past life in a completely different part of the world to where they are born, different race and religion. Where there is absolutely no genetic connection.
Another area of interest for me too is articles I have read recently about people who have been the recipients of transplants. Experiencing personality changes, changes in their taste in food, in music and in some cases right handed people becoming left handed. Discovering new skills and abilities that did not have prior to surgery.
Some of this can be put down to the drugs they are taking to suppress rejection, and the psychological affects of undergoing such radical surgery. But in some cases there are things that cannot just be explained away with any rational or logical explanation. For me this does suggest there is something tangible in the cell memory explanation.
My perspective about life and how much or little control we have over it is this. Yes, one theory put forward is that we have a life plan. That no matter what we do, what route we take through life it is predestined. I believe we do have control over the way we approach life, what routes we take, who we interact with. We have syncronistic moments where we meet people who will be significant to us, and who will help us with our spiritual growth. But ultimately we end up exactly where we are meant to be.
But if you take this idea to its beginnings, I believe the plan we have is one we have formed for ourselves. Prior to each life, having reflected on previous incarnations, what we have learned from them and what is still left for us to learn. I believe we then look at what kind of conditions we need in which the optimum conditions can be found to learn or work through aspects of growth and evolvement. So for me, saying we are living a life that has been pre determined by something or someone, outside of ourselves does not ring true. Ultimately, it is OUR life plan, OUR choice and OUR free will. Love and light Kaz
