I recently read this quote "You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life".
I would like to know what this means to you?

Hello Kaz,
For me it means, that sometimes our mind creates problems for itself. If you live in your mind, there's always another problem to solve and if not, the mind creates another problem. So, maybe sometimes we should stop and live in our lives rather than just watch. I think it's a good thing to observe and analyze at times, but if it's the only way you live, then you don't really live. I hope that makes sense.

What is the big deal about being happy? You only create more fodder for a Monty Python parody like THE LIFE OF BRIAN. Happiness seems almost narcisist in a way.
Now feeling good I can understand. It might be time to celebrate or not but you can always feel good if you did the right thing.
Besides then you can always exercise the option of being VERY unhappy if things go wrong and you are down for the count. Unlike the boxing ring someone is enabled to come to your rescue but they won't bother if all you want is a smiley face painted on.
In fact I suspect asking for life's directions would only invite a practical joke like "just follow the lemmings". Jumping off a clift isn't an end to itself unless you don't know or care any better.
Besides the options of throwing yourself to certain death has no options. The converse at least has some chance of success and that seems very happy to contemplate.
If not you can try something else if possible and freedom practically guarantees a happy ending.

Gruntal,
I don't understand why happiness is narcissistic, maybe we have different definitions of happiness. I guess I could see if you're talking about superficial happiness, but I don't think thats what the quote was talking about. Maybe contentment is a better word.
My guess is that different people would be given different advice. If you tend to be the type of person that doesn't really think and usually just follows the crowd, then well you should stop and seriously analyze your life. If you tend to always be "doing" without thinking, then you need to sit and think. But for a person like me who has spent most of their lives analyzing, wracking their brains for answers, while mostly standing still and physically doing very little, "sit down and analyze" isn't that helpful. I need to accomplish things physically not just mentally. And for me that requires turning off the part of my mind that's searching and worrying. If I don't turn it off, I tend to think of everything that happened in the past, everything that could go wrong, instead of being in the moment. I think this quote is about being in the moment as well. Also about feeling, rather than thinking. Feelings can be as good of guides as logic can.
My view is that it is possible that doing the right thing can make you feel good or happy (whichever term you prefer). Why do they have to be two different things?
Also, there is the idea that happiness is within yourself (also, that life's meaning is within you), but often times people look for it externally. I don't think the quote is saying 'Don't think, forget about everything and be happy'. I think the quote was another way of asking the question, 'If you're looking in the wrong place for something, are you ever going to find it?'

To me they go hand in hand. If we truely saw ourselves as spiritual beings then naturally we would live our lives with a knowing of its purpose, and in turn im sure happiness would prevail, hence no need to search for either.....Silvereagle x

"You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life". Happiness consists of ‘this moment’; the meaning of life is likewise found ‘in this moment’; this quote is much like ‘waiting for tomorrow’ …. There is no such thing… there is only ‘this moment’. So, create it; live it; enjoy it; BE in it!

this is such a good post. The replies where even better. i will try and keep up. i am in transition right now. i spend most of my time meditating, praying and researching. I've had the Christian experience of; Eygpt and Babylon under generational curses. i am just recently coming out of this. i think normal life is a process of continuing to learn doing what i spend most of my time doing. and then spending time actually living life. It is much easier to learn through visions than real experience if the issues are extreme. i really enjoyed the responses.

For me it mean that one hasn't found happiness or the meaning of life yet. The quote implies that searching, moving on, discovering new things, etc., itself is an unhappy state. This isn't necessarily true.
It also hints at that there is a point where one get's "it" and that this will be the end. Again, not an idea I can agree with.

For me it means if we are "searching" for something, then we are not in the present moment, which is the only place we will ever really find meaning and happiness.
I've done a lot of searching all my life and just very recently feel I'm letting go of that. It's a very strange feeling. I know the saying "the grass is not greener on the other side" and conceptually I understood but it took some time for the bugs to be worked out I guess.

It means that if you go looking for happiness in places that only consists of the flesh then you will never find the ultimate happiness that is the love of GOD, If you spend your time on earth searching for the meaning of life then your not only wasting your life, your questioning GOD about why he created humans in the first place, when you should be thanking him for the precious life that he so generously gifted to you.

Most people seem to think that happiness is something you must seek. They would be surprised (and yes maybe happy) if they would only realize that happiness comes from within and they already possess it. If you want to be happy simply be happy. There is no thing or no one that can make you happy. There are people or things you can be happy about but happiness is always self-generated.
This, I feel, can also be said about love.

How ironic isn't it bluestar? We look outward for that which we already have within. We are never alone yet we seek companionship. We are loved more than we can ever explain yet so many people jump into bad relationships seeking this love. We have all the tools with us
