Dimona (Hebrew: דִּימוֹנָה) is an Israeli city in the Negev desert, 36 kilometres (22 mi) to the south of Beersheba and 35 kilometres (22 mi) west of the Dead Sea above the Arava valley in the Southern District of Israel. Its population at the end of 2007 was 33,600. The city's name is derived from a biblical town, mentioned in Joshua 15:21-22.Dimona was one of the development towns created in the 1950s under the leadership of Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion. Dimona itself was conceived in 1953, and settled in 1955, mostly by new immigrants from Northern Africa, who also constructed the city's houses. The emblem of Dimona (as a local council), adopted 2 March 1961, appeared on a stamp issued on 24 March 1965. When the Israeli nuclear program started later that decade, a location not far from the city was chosen for the Negev Nuclear Research Center due to its relative isolation in the desert and availability of housing. In spite of a gradual decrease during the 1980s, the city's population began to grow once again with the beginning of the Russian immigration in the 1990s. Currently, Dimona is the third largest city in the Negev, with the population of 33,900. Dimona is home to Israel's Black Hebrew community, governed by its founder and spiritual leader, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel. The Black Hebrews number about 3000 in Dimona, with additional families in Arad, Mitzpe Ramon and the Tiberias area. Their official status in Israel was an ongoing issue for many years, but in May 1990, the issue was resolved with the issuing of first B/1 visas, and a year later, issuing of temporary residency. Status was extended to August 2003, when the Israeli Ministry of Interior granted permanent residency. In 2003 the Black Hebrews garnered much public attention when singer Whitney Houston visited them in Dimona. I thought I would share some information about Dimona, Israel since this is my legal name (the Dimona, not the Israel part lol)! I've always wondered why my mom named me Dimona. She had no ideal that there was a city in Israel named Dimona. As a matter fact this is the name that came to her after she had me and was in the hospital filling out the paperwork! The other coincidence that I noticed while compiling this information is that the emblem of Dimona was adopted exactly 7 years to date before I was born! How interesting!!!One of the items on my "bucket list" is to visit the city of Dimona, Israel. The city that I was named after...sort of! Blessings Dee

Dear Dee, I found this really interesting to read. Not many, can say they have been named after a town can they. I can see why you feel a connection. I believe there are no such things as coincidences in life, everything happens for a reason. If the name popped into your mum's head completely out of the blue, there must be some fascinating purpose behind it. One you may discover, when you fulfill your wish to go and visit there. Thank you for sharing. Love and light Kaz

Thanks Kaz!
I feel the same way. I pray that one day soon I will be able to visit Dimona. I feel like there something there for me to find out.
I agree, I dont think there are any coincidences either. So there has to be a reason why I share a name of a city in Israel, their emblem was adopted on my birthday and a large number of blacks migrated to Dimona from Chicago in the 1960s (I'm from Chicago lol). I hope it is revealed to me soon.
Thanks for responding.
Blessings, Dee

Hi Dee, That is very interesting that their emblem was adopted on your birthday. Do you know if you have any Jewish Ancestory? It is interesting I have been thinking a lot about Judaism lately. My Grandmother's maiden name was Harvey and apparently, Harvey is a Jewish name. She was from Banbury in Oxfordshire. Apparently, there were Jews living in Banbury, but it is very hard to find out anything about them. Sadly, in those days Judaism was regarded with suspicion and I believe it was illegal to practice their faith. I am thinking if they did, it was done in secrecy. Hence it is difficult to find any written evidence freely available on line. If I wanted to learn more, I would have to join a specialized website, which costs money. I cannot explain why I have been wondering if there is any Jewish blood in my ancestry, only to say I have always had a deep interest and felt an affinity with the Jews and wonder if there is more to it that I am feeling on a intuitive level. No one in my father's family has ever spoken of it, but I have always thought my Dad's nose was very Jewish looking. lol Its a strong family characteristic that my youngest sister and I have as do all my Dad's brothers and sister. Again, thank you for sharing and I hope you get to visit Dimona in the near future. Love and light Kaz

Hi Kaz, I've never heard of any Jews in my family. Ironically we have Germans in my family from way back. The Kaisers. LOL I didn't know Harvey was Jewish name either! Its very difficult to research Jewish ancestory much like it is with searching Black ancestory. The Jews were so persecuted that a lot of them used different names as not to be discovered to be a Jew. With that being said, some of the records from long ago might be incorrect due to them not wanting to be discovered. You definitely have your work cut out for you, but I'm sure it will be well worth the time and effort to try and find out. Have you searched through obituaries online? A lot of that is free and you might get some bit of information that will aid you in your research. You may also want to go to the library and search old newspapers from around that time...once again its free and you might find something out. Funny thing about Jews is that my husband is Jewish, and my daughter's Godfather is Jewish (don't ask me how that happened lol he was my best friend at the time)! I always been surround by Jews (even with me being black)...they've just always gravitated towards me. Hmmmmm The funny thing is that they've never known my real name!! I've gone by "Dee" since college. lol Once last thing....I was once told that in one of my past lives I lived in the biblical days and was in and around Israel...I believe I was told that I was some type of Jew that was a leader of something or a judge or something like that and I was a woman. Blessings, Dee

Hi Dee, I did try the online census to try to find out more about my Grandmother's father Benjamin Harvey, but was locked out when I got to the more detailed version. It is a good suggestion to get hold of historical newspapers of the time, but I think you have to actually go to the town. But it is something I will keep in mind if I am ever up that way. I am fascinated by geneology, because we learn so much about who we are and where we have come from. While researching my fathers, father's side of the family, I found some really interesting information. Apparently, my Great Grandmother was a working medium, and my Dad's father's father used to play the organ for her at her seances. In the days when it was all spooky and atmospheric lol One of his Aunts was engaged to the ships surgeon on the famous battleship the Hood and sadly when down with his ship. I also discovered that we have quite a few excelent violin players in the family. Shame it past me by that little talent, I can barely play the recorder lol But my daugher Danielle is very musical and can read music and hear the notes and play by ear. I always wondered where that came from, and now I know I will carry on digging into the past and will let you know how I get on, in the meantime I would love to hear more, if you go digging yourself. Love and light Kaz

Oh wow Kaz! You've gotten some really good information! Well that explains your "gift" you have with connecting to people. That would make you a 4th generation medium! I always say its good to know where you come from! Some people say leave the past in the past, but I don't believe it. Thanks so much for sharing with me Blessings Dee

Once last thing....I was once told that in one of my past lives I lived in the biblical days and was in and around Israel...I believe I was told that I was some type of Jew that was a leader of something or a judge or something like that and I was a woman. Hello Dee, I think the female judge is Deborah. It's in the Old Testament. That's really interesting that your mother named you that. I think it's cool when you have an affinity to a culture that is different from the one you're born into. I'm amazed that you found that much information through your research. There seem to be a lot of "random"(of course there's no such thing as random, right ) connections between you and Dimona, Isreal. I hope you get to visit someday.

Hi Clara,
Oh really? I didn't know that there was a female judge Deborah. I'll have to read the story of her. My mom thought of naming me Deborah, but decided that was too common for me. lol
And yes you're right, there's no such thing as random.
Thanks for your input Clara
Blessings Dee

Talking of Jews I come from a Jewish family on both sides, for the last 2000 years.
Regarding Dimona, it was a town which already existed in the times of the Old Testament and is mentioned in it.
Deborah was a prophetess of God, the fourth Judge of Israel, a general counselor and a warrior. She defeated the assirians and brought peace to Israel for 40 years.
