Recurring Elements

I have had numerous dreams that have the following two recurring elements, and was wondering if this happens with anyone else, as well as what these elements possibly mean and why they are recurring.

There is a river ... very long and winding ... in some dreams the river is flowing quietly ... in others it is like white water rapids ... and others it is frozen over and I am walking on top. In all the dreams I am on the river in some way, and then get to a specific point and go onto dry land. Most times I am alone on the river, but one dream there was a large amount of people with me, none of whom I knew. It is Always the same river.

I also have dreams of a house ... very very large and old ... with long hallways and hidden rooms. Sometimes the house is fresh and livable, but in most of the dreams, it is falling apart and dangerous, although I am never afraid. I am always inside the house and I know it belongs to me, although in one dream I was looking at the house from the outside and I knew that it was mine and at the same time it wasn't (hard to put that into words). I have thought whether the house has been made up of the houses I have lived in over my life, but it is totally unique and Always the same house.

When I wake up, I wonder where the river is and where the house is ... like they are real and I should know where they are and I should be there. I can vividly picture both the river and house at any time. They have never been in the same dream together.

In dream symbology, recurring dreams, usually indicate an important message for the dreamer is within it. The dream will keep on repeating until YOU the dreamer, understands what it is trying to tell you.

In dream symbology the river represents 'the river of life'. The flow of your life. Water symbolises the emotions and the unconscious. You say in some dreams the river is flowing 'quietly'. This would indicate at times 'emotionally' you are calm. You say at other times it is like white water rapids. This says to me, at other times your emotions are 'turbulent' and 'chaotic'. Reflecting the churned up boiling aspect of the 'white water'. You say at other times it is 'frozen' over. This tells me, that at times, you 'freeze' your emotions. Are unable to deal with them, so you numb yourself to how you are feeling. 'Walking on top' you detach from them completely. Does this make sense to you?

You say 'I am on the river' so connected to how you are feeling emotionally and being carried along by these emotions. Then 'get to a specific point and go onto dry land'. This is you having moments of respite from the emotional pull of your feelings and by stepping onto land, you are grounding yourself and simply being in the present moment and functioning in life, without being affected overly by your emotional state.

So I would say this dream is showing you how much you are affected by your inner emotional life and the many different ways in which you react to it. One very positive aspect to this Tina, is that you never say, 'you are out of your depth', or you become 'submerged in the water of the river'. This tells me, that whilst you are very much influenced by your emotional state, so far, they have not overwhelmed you to the point that you cannot cope. So you are far stronger and emotionally stable then you might think.

Houses in dream symbology represent YOU the dreamer. Its size, its contents, its condition, its many rooms, all describe aspects of you. Your psyche, your personality, the way you interact with others, your view of yourself and the view you wish the world to see of you.

The dream house is very large and very old. This symbolically tells me that you, your mind is expansive and large. The age, may indicate an old soul. With much wisdom to draw upon, to bring into this life. The house has many hidden rooms. So this indicates to me, that there are aspects of you that are hidden. Hidden from the world, hidden maybe even from you. It maybe that you have aspects of you that you wish to keep hidden. Things that you yourself do not want to see. It can also indicate that there is a lot of hidden potential within you too.

Keeping something hidden, does not necessarily mean that you have anything to be ashamed of or to hide. It can also mean, that you are a extremely private person. All of the above could relate to these hidden rooms. As human beings we can be extremely complicated and multi faceted. What we do is work on what needs to be brought into the light, the negative and the positive.

Long hallways and corridors, can be likened to bridges, as they often represent a bridge between different levels of consciousness to the unconscious aspect of the dreamer. In your dream, you say sometimes the house is fresh and lovable. This tells me that living within yourself at times you feel at ease and comfortable with who you are. But at other times the house is falling apart and dangerous. Now this is showing you and me that often, you feel as if you are falling apart. It is interesting that you say, even though you sense the danger, you are never afraid. That is good, it shows that deep down inside, your intuitive connection to your higher self is strong.

On some level, you know you, your true self is always safe. That you know that what you are experiencing is really what is going on more on the surface of your psyche. Things that need to be worked on. Deep down, in spite of your uncertainty and at times fear of falling apart, you are always in control. You have within you, the wisdom, the insight and the power to understand that what is going on in your outer world, though may seem momentous, is really only a small part in a bigger plan. You know, YOU have the power within you to change things for the better.

This is only my personal belief Tina. But I do believe that many very old and wise souls. Deliberately choose a life, in which they will constantly be challenged. They do this, as a means of enhancing and speeding up their spiritual growth. I do not believe we come to earth to suffer. I truly believe, that whatever challenges we face, we do have the skills and innate wisdom within to deal with them. Though when going through these trials, it is hard to believe it. You must believe it!

'The house is totally unique. I look at it and I know its mine, but at the same time it wasn't'. Your words Tina.. it is saying to you, that the house, is so much more then just a house. YOU, are so much more then you think you are! Its a composition of all the houses, all the aspects of you that has ever been. That is why there is so much about the house, that is familiar to you but you don't recognise some of it. You are unique. You have so much within you. You just need to reconnect with these very special qualities.

Hello Kaz and Silvia ... I had a dream about the house again, and I was hoping perhaps if you could help me understand it. The dream itself was not bad, but after I woke and was thinking about it, I became very emotional.

In this dream the house was not on a street and had no yard like in All my previous dreams. All there was of it was like a blueprint on the ground ... well, I do not even know if it was on the ground per se ... it was more just in the middle of nothing, but it was not like floating or anything. All the rooms were outlined in blue and each room was labelled. I was walking on this blueprint, going from room to room and changing the labels on each room. I stood still for what seemed a very long time, and then I started turning around on the spot, and the surroundings slowly changed to sand, with alot of water all around the blueprint. The surroundings changed at the same time as I turned around on the spot ... does that make sense. I turned around three times before all the changes were done, and then I changed all the labels on the rooms to exactly what they should be. I brushed my hands together and crossed my arms and woke up.

I laid in bed trying to see if this house was the same one as in my previous dreams, but all I felt was that this was MY house ... Only mine ... whereas, the house from my dreams before, I shared, not only with my family, but also with "Others". The other feeling I had and it is SO not a good feeling to have, is that I did NOT want to share this house with anyone.

My heart started hurting real bad then and I started to cry, and then I got so angry. I would not have said anything about this, but Silvia had asked me once what thoughts I had when I got angry. I realize that this last part was when I was fully awake, but I think the pain and anger has something to do with the dream ... I really do not know.

Wow.. what a powerful dream.

As you know, in dream symbology the house is YOU the dreamer. Each room, an aspect of you. Where you are in the house, and what are you are doing, provides many interesting insights for you. I found it very interesting that you had a blue print of your house. .

The blueprint hovers just above the ground, so it is floating in mid air. Floating in the air, is symbolic of being in tune with the spiritual self. In waking time, a blue print, for me, is about the conception of the house. If you have designed the house, this is your ideal, your vision of it. What this tells me, that this blue print, is connected to your vision of your spiritual self. This may be you connecting to your higher divine self, your true self. Or it is your vision, your real desire, of how you want to be.

Using the blueprint, you stand looking at all the different rooms in your house as it now stands, looking at the labels for each room. Now in life, we do label things. We have a place for doing this or that, or a certain way of thinking. It is as if you have looked at these things, and decided to change them, according to the New Blue Print of the house or YOUR life.

In dream symbology the number three represents the Trinity. Mind-Body-Spirit Harmony. So this is telling you that this dream has a spiritual message for you. Which I think we have already established. But this confirms it for me. The ritual of turning around, I think is just a reinforcement of what you are doing. As do the rooms being outlined in Blue, as in dream symbology, blue represents spirituality. So that word Spiritual comes up again.

The sand represents the limitless aspect of the self, constantly changing. If the house was standing on sand, then you would have to question its foundations. Meaning, sand, through its constant change, is not solid. So its in transition. Then you are surrounded by water. Water in dream symbolism represents the emotional energy. So its colour, clear or murky, its state, calm or choppy are all indicative of your emotional state. You don't mention anything about the colour of the water or how it appeared. When you turn for the third time, to finish this ritual, you don't say how it ends. Does the blueprint stay still hovering in the air, or does it descend to the ground?

Brushing your hands off, is is indicative of finishing energy work. Getting rid of any excess energy. You end by folding your arms in a protective gesture. This all reinforces the ritualistic element to this dream. Which makes what you are doing with your house, your inner work all the more powerful.

In dream symbology the bedroom is represents our inner most hopes and dreams and the unconscious mind. So a place where you feel the most safe. This is the intimate aspect of the self. A place where you can truly be yourself. You emphasise in the dream, that this house, is yours and only yours. You are giving yourself permission, to put yourself first. This may be connected to the changes you have had recently in your personal life. A result, also of the inner work you have been doing.

There is nothing wrong Tina, with not wanting to share this oh so personal aspect of yourself with others. You are entitled to have some privacy and to give yourself some much needed quality time. But I know you are finding this difficult to deal with at the moment. But it will get easier, as you start to get used to and enjoy your new found freedom, in terms of time and personal space. You will also work through, any emotional feelings you may have connected to this, as it rises. Be gentle with yourself and just take it one step at a time.

Hello Kaz ... Thank you so very much for your interpretation. I never thought I would ever feel or become spiritual. It was something that I blocked for so very long that even the "self help" section in a book store would make me cringe and say "ya right ... there's NO WAY I got any spirit". Now, between the experiences I have had with your meditation, my dreams (which have also been blocked and are only now becoming more clear and regular), insights from reading and chatting in the room, and finally remembering parts of my younger years before, and some of the spiritual experiences I had then ... well, I am in awe most of the time these days ... incredible, jaw dropping awe.

I thought about the water all around from my dream, and what I most remember was the sheer expanse of it ... absolutely no land anywhere ... there were waves ... bigger than ripples, but not whitecaps ... and the colour was black or maybe a very dark blue. I remember now too that on the horizons were big white thick clouds, and Only on the horizons. When I finished turning around, the blueprint was part of the sand, but I do not remember the feeling of it descending. As I walked from room to room changing the labels, I left footprints on the sand (barefeet). The blueprint was not marred in any way if I walked on one of the blue lines.
