This is the definition of Fear on Wikipedia
Fear is one of a group of reactions in life forms with a long history of survival advantages for the owner.
It has compounded from simple reactions like a flower closing it's petals at night, and in humans has many built on symbiotic subroutines, based on triggers of data and internal data construction models or thoughts or reactive peptides and other sub-systems in the human brain.
Although it is an arbitrary classification, some techniques and chemicals can suppress fear.
It occurs during the manifestation of a real or perceived attack on the system, its evolutionary purpose being to incite the system to react. Fear also can be described as a feeling of extreme dislike towards certain conditions, objects, people, or situations such as: fear of darkness, fear of ghosts, etc. Personal fear varies extremely in degree from mild caution to extreme phobia and paranoia. Fears may be a factor within a larger social network, wherein personal fears are synergetically compounded as mass hysteria.
Fear may underlie some phenomena of behavior modification, although these phenomena can be explained without adducing fear as a factor in them. Furthermore, application of aversive stimuli is also often ineffective in producing change in the behaviour intended to be changed. Fearing objects or contexts can be learned; in animals this is being studied as fear conditioning, which depends on the emotional circuitry of the brain. It is one of the basic emotions and is linked heavily to the amygdala neurons.
Some philosophers have considered fear to be a useless emotion; other thinkers note the usefulness of fear as a warning of potentially unpleasant situations or consequences. Still others consider that fear is the fuel that feeds the ego's (as in "separating/judgmental agent") engine. Note that "fear" in the sense of "God Fearing" means "To regard with reverence and awe".

So in a sense fear can be good and bad for us. Now lets put the bad side of fear to one side, we have already talked about quenching fears fire with water and love. Lets take a look at the good side of fear, the fear that keeps us on our toes, the fear that makes us better people. The fear of losing something makes us strive harder, or the fear of getting away from something makes us run faster. This fear pushes us on past boundaries, that may have seemed impossible at some point, this fight or flight scenario keeps entering our lives at different times, just as it did with cavemen, who would try to kill a dangerous animal, so that he could eat or run for his life. Now in modern day we do not need to fight so hard for the survival of our body, but we have to fight hard to keep our mind and spirit on track. We are always facing problems whether it be at home, at work or on the road. Sometimes out there in the world today it is dog eat dog, a fight for survival of the fittest. But the fittest need not be the strongest in body, strength comes from within, If you have a strong mind and even stronger spirit, you can win any battle, not by fighting but through loving. If you fight anger with anger, you just create more anger, there is enough anger in the world without you adding to it. Now imagine an angry man in his car is complaining at something he deemed that you did wrong, he is venting all his anger at you, he is livid. Now if you tell him where to go this is only going to make him worse, but if you slow your mind and body down and do not engage with his anger and instead start speaking slowly, sending him your love, over time he will slow down, he will realise that your not a bad person after all, think as he thinks, he has just met you and in his eyes you have caused trouble to him. He does not know that you have love in your heart, he has never met you before. He is angry and wants to argue and fight. Now he does not expect his anger to be met with love, this does not happen in his world, but when he does meet love, it throws him off balance, he does not know how to react. Now if you keep loving him, while talking to him honestly, he will slow down to your vibration, if you quicken yours, so will he. Stay calm for this man is calming down like an angry animal would do when it meets no danger, while it sees danger it is ready to fight, snarling to protect its self. The man is now calm like the animal that sees no danger, the danger has passed for the man in our scene, he feels calm. If one shows true love with a little patience one can calm down the angriest giant as deep down all anyone ever wants is to be loved. Our man in the scene now feels loved and do you know what, he will love you back for being the first person he has met that does not engage with his anger, but shows him love and understanding he truly seeks.
