Everyday there is a fight; there is a fight between the mind and the soul. The mind is pulling the soul back and letting the ego take charge. The mind is influenced by the five senses. In fact, they are considered to be the five horses that draw the chariot of the mind and make the chariot or the ego feel the power of “being me”, but the soul is silently fighting back. The soul tries to use the intellect to realize the truth that this body is temporary. This mind is just wandering, taking us away into the jungles of thoughts. Unfortunately the voice of the soul is very weak and unless one has tuned into oneself, one can’t hear the voice of the soul. In the loud noise of the mind and the senses, the soul is deafened. The fight continues, but actually a very weak fight. Very rarely do you find a soul defeating a mind-ego-sense combination. Most of the times, the soul just perishes letting it to be reborn in another form. Therefore the fight continues. The fight is to be able to defeat the mind, to silence the mind, to sublimate the mind, for us to be able to take charge of the five horses, the five senses and to subdue the ego. In fact, the fight is to annihilate the ego, to completely destroy it so that the soul reigns.

Hi air. I would say the challenge is to bring the ego into healthy balance. Ego is simply one happy aspect of this incarnation miracle we call life; we couldn't function without an ego.

Sure, one perspective of normal living is to get the ego, as you say, to a healthy balance. But if one wants to pursue the true purpose of life, if one wants to evolve to a higher living, then one has to go beyond the healthy balance of the ego. One has to actually destroy the ego. I know this is not living, or as you would call, a normal life. But the question is, do we want to live a normal life or a supreme life?

Hi Air, This is a very interesting question, which seems to place one at a crossroads on the spiritual path, do I entertain the supreme and try to live a normal life, or do I put the supreme first and devote myself to the supreme fully, everything else is secondary. If I'am at one with the supreme, everything I need will be provided (as apposed to everything I want). Do you live your life in this way, have you committed one hundred per cent to the supreme?
Namaste.

Hi air. You see, that all depends on one's belief regarding the true purpose of life. I personally don't believe our purpose is to abandon the physical; I believe the purpose of incarnation it is to fully experience and embrace our humanness. We exist in a state of supreme egolessness while in spirit, we spend eternity in that state; what would be the purpose of attempting to achieve the same thing here in the physical? I would say this idea of needing to abandon earthly aspects (renouncing physical love and annihilating the ego and so forth) to become a devoted monk or nun, is an old form of consciousness born of religious and spiritual zealousness. It's not relevant any longer with regards to the modern initiation path.
