This is a thought I actually wrote to someone back in the summer this year, but I want to share with you today:
"The other day I read of someone’s concerns of age, and change, and how much Harder it seems to be to “accomplish” what is aimed for, as travelers, and receivers of light and Truth. I had to agree; it is this way for me as well, and I must Work harder to achieve it.
Is it not similar to a marriage? Honestly, it seems much easier to, ah, be intimate without much effort at the beginning of a relationship. Over time, life gets Busy, partners get more Complacent with one another and may have to work a bit to create the mood of intimacy and affection that used to just…Happen. Even though we strive for a spiritual relationship that is not unlike that of a lover, or at least a greatly loved presence, it seems that time can create its own barriers to our consistent achievement of these ‘states of bliss’. So what do we do?
Meditational instruction and techniques are available to us for a Reason, to do exactly that – to help get us Back to the point of communion that once strengthened us, gave us such joy, and simply Carried Us Away.
To those new to the practice of meditation – to those who have not yet achieved the bliss of that divine connection that awakens and enlightens - There’s something you need to imagine first. I use metaphors to give others a concrete image to focus on; I hope this one does that
I live near the East coast, the Atlantic Ocean, and out here our waves seem different from those on the Pacific Coast. The waves seem bigger, more choppy to me.....but barring storms, the ocean constantly ebbs and flows in its play with the beaches, and the waves undulate in succession all the time. It’s nice…..
I want you to imagine wading out about chest-deep into the ocean, when the tide is just beginning to come in; pushing your arms out away from your sides, hands and fingers spread, and feeling each wave as it rolls gently over you. Now turn around so that you are facing the shore, but stay where you are.
At this point, you may look at the waves lapping over your arms and hands and wish they Were a bit bigger! However, look around you to either side and recognize how Far each wave is spread as it continues toward the shore.... hmmm. Sometimes denial brings focus on only Part of a whole, but embracement (this time, of the sheer Length of the wave, and its part in the flow) brings focus on the Whole.....
It takes about 12 hours for the tide to peak at ‘high’ and begin to ebb back into itself….If you were to try to Push the wave with your hand, attempting to make it bigger before its time, what happens? The water simply moves around your hand and appears to dissipate; you see, what you have pushed is only Part of the wave. Instead of making the wave bigger, you have interrupted the part that is near you!
Thus it is with your goal; you must relax, focus on the Whole of the water around you, and BECOME the wave. When you Are the wave, you feel the subtle increase in fluctuation that will eventually become a Peak tide, and take you where you want to go.
