I only went back a few pages overall...I'm sure a thread of two has been done about this topic before, so humor me my desire to Repeat timeless thoughts today
There is a teaching, shared by every culture and religion I know of, which basically says to do to Others those things we wish would be done for Us; to treat Others, as we wish We would be treated. What does that Mean, anyway? The words are clear enough, but how does this teaching translate into daily life?
I know someone who is very self-centered; I was thinking today about her Beans, lol. You see, she is on a committee in Church to make food for grieving families; it is customary here to bring food to those who have lost a loved one, as we assume they will be occupied with Grieving and not wish to cook.
This woman I know volunteers to cook the green beans every time, because it is Easy to do. She fixes a large amount of them but does not add seasonings or anything else to the beans. Now if it were Her beans and she were fixing them for Herself and Her family, she would add almonds, or onions, bacon and flavorings to the beans…why not for others? Perhaps they are not paying attention to what they are eating at these times, but why not do Just as much for others as she would for herself?
Often in the West we find ourselves buying gifts for our families, friends or others at holidays, birthdays or other special occasions but everyone is so Busy that no one has Time for to choose a gift with real Meaning; after all, it’s the Thought that counts, right? Though we truly have Not given it much thought.
I wonder how many of these “busy” people would give heartfelt, handmade gifts if they had more time? Or would think more Carefully about what the receiver of the gift truly Needs or Desires, if they thought about that teaching? “Give to Others the kinds of thoughtful, helpful, Loving gifts that You would like to be given.”
I have tried to walk in Many areas of life, from one of ease and comfort to one of poverty (um, as close as we can Get in this country; here we are not really Destitute just by being “homeless”)…with people of different backgrounds, in cities and in rural areas…I have been Many “people” in my life but I have not been them All, my friends, and there is room for us All to walk in the shoes of another….and wonder about that teaching: “Do for Others those things which you want done for You.”
What About the truth of this teaching? It is surely a spiritual issue as much as a physical one, for those things which we do on Earth certainly reflect our Inner person, our Intent as we walk this life…they affect more than just Ourselves, more than just our surface reality.
I believe we Need to bring abstract, spiritual teachings into Reality to fully benefit from the Power of the teaching; thoughts today?
Love and Wisdom,
Mary Anne
