It Easter time! Marshmallow Peeps; peanut butter chocolate eggs! I guess as kids we weren't as rich and contented ourselves with hard boiled eggs colored with Pass Coloring Kits. The pet stores have a run on pet rabbits. Little girls get to dress up and go to Sunday School and show off. The churches try to find as much seating as possible as Standing Room Only doesn't work when the crowd does their obligatory once a year visit to the neighborhood place of worship.
Central to the theme is life reborn. The Christians of course tout it as the time the Christ rose from the dead. The Pagans just think it coincides with Spring Time. Now it is an excuse to have ham dinners with the family. The metaphor of enduring the long hard winter is less on our minds now.
I find it very telling the idea of growth and rebirth is on our minds not so much lately. And when it is we tend to get somewhat dogmatic about it. Of course we think there is life eternal but only under certain conditions. That seems like a contradiction in terms. So I guess we approach it in very child like terms. That makes it safe and less controversial. Being old I have seen a lot of natural death and I know it coming to get me! But apparently not this month. I am still alive. I feel like I am 100 years old but at least I can still feel. I remember the holiday as a kid though. The magic seems to be forgotten.
My whole mind set needs to be reborn and be raised from the dead . Happy Easter !
