I don't have nightmares very often, but when I do, and I wake up from them, I observe my own reaction to them and I am in awe! The power that it has to distort, to corrupt, to bend reality, and while you're in it, it seems real to the point that when you wake up, you have an actual physical response to it!
For a long time now I haven't even been scared in my own nightmares, but the last time it happened "it" found something, a really "soft" spot to hit me with, and my first thought upon waking was "AMAZING"!
How do the rest of you react to your nightmares?

Actually my most stunning experience has been very pleasant dreams. For one steeped in intellectual honesty it seems a mockery to dream something that never happened. To say the least I don't view the world with rose colored glasses so why should I experience a dream reality so phony ?
It is getting to a point where if I experience a nightmare I am tempted to go along with it and see what happens. Since it is only a dream what could possibly happen anyway? Alas that would involve lucid dreaming and that is beyond me now. Well not completely. I have occasionally had dreams so ridiculous I had to deal with them while I was dreaming and reminded myself ( in the dream ) I was safe ect.
It would be fun to have a dialog with the demon in the dream and find out why he/she is so mad at me and see what is said. Especially if the demon is me staring back at myself.

We all have our demons that may come back to haunt us in our nightmares. Mine was a lot more subjective, an inanimate object that I chose not place great value upon... the only inanimate object I hold any value whatsoever, and my nightmare hit me exactly there... hehehe you have to love the pinprick precision of your own psyche when it really decides to stick it to you!

It is said that the pure (enlightened) mind doesn't dream. Hmm...maybe it's true. But I never got that kind of mind yet. Though there was a time, when I lived in my forest temple, I didn't dream at all. But after I came back to live a normal life, well, I got so many bad dreams. hahaha
Nightmare (or even knightmare) has never been good. The point is it makes us have no choice. Even a choice to fight. Mostly we could only struggle to flight and flight.
I think a nightmare is the good example to point out between worldly and spiritual path. Someone who only walks through a worldly path will never have a choice. Every time his/her ego/emotion inflates, s/he becomes its slave. Like a man in his dream, wandering without any a point/choice. But anyone who walks a spiritual path, at least, he will have much more choice. Even to be awakened from his dream finally. To choose how to handle his own emotion and react in the better way, no harm way (to himself and other).
So,Temet nosce, indeed! :-)

It's interesting how you talk of your nightmare, as if it was something seperate from you. This alien intelligence, that invaded your mind and found your vulnerable spot. On one level, a dream is simply our own unconscious minds trying to communicate with us. In dream state, the barriers we erect within our minds to protect us or prevent us from looking at something we don't want to see in waking life, are well and truly down. When the conscious mind receeds and the unconscious mind takes over. All the 'stuff' that we've repressed or not acknowledged can come crowding forward. We find ourselves in surreal or strange landscapes. Interacting with all manner of strange folk and in some case beasties. Dressed up in archetypal imagery and symbolism.
I don't know what your inanimate object was, or how it made you feel. But to me, the fact it elicited such a powerful response in you, would indicate that something needs to be addressed or faced. I believe that our nightmares are used as a vehicle by the mind - psyche, to teach, help and guide us. Because for the most part, even those people who never usually remember their dreams, remember their nightmares. Anything that has a very strong emotional attachment to it, be it fear, anger, rage, sadness or grief, lingers long after we awaken. And that is why they have such power over us. I believe that any emotional reaction or experience we have in dream state is amplified many times over. To understand your dreams, is to know yourself.

I have no issues with it, it is simply the only object in my possession that I place some inherent value on, but admittedly in an odd manner.
While its relatively monetary value is average at best, I seem to feel about it (to my own surprise) the same its as if it was 10x its original value.
But this is ridiculous, I have stuff that I own that is worth a lot more, but the fact that seeing it trashed in my own nightmare I woke up almost to the point of a panic attack!
