What is realization? One realizes that explaining realization is not possible because realization is not discovered. Realization is something that one already has, but there is a cloak of ignorance that hides what is already there. Sometimes, suddenly you realize, and then your “real eyes” open, you realize the truth and you get to know about it. It is not possible to make somebody else realize.
Realization is a self-discovery process and this can be achieved by a seeker, not by a doubter. A doubter will keep questioning and doubting – he will live and will die without understanding the reality of life. It’s sad. But a true seeker who wants to seek and realize the truth will surely realize it. How does he realize the truth? He has to ask certain questions.
First, one must understand that God is a creator we don’t know who, what, and where God is. In fact, nobody knows. There are religions and beliefs that state that God is the creator of not just the Earth, but the entire cosmos. The Earth is just a speck, just a tiny dot, in the entire cosmos. However, we don’t know anything about the creator. We are too insignificant to be able to comprehend God.
Lets us comprehend ourselves. So, when we want to attain self-realization, the question we have to ask ourselves is who am I. Then, we will realize that we have a body, a mind, and an intellect and we have an energy we may call it the spirit, or soul, but each of us is a personality, an ego, and we are born and we will die, which is beyond doubt. We are not here to stay permanently. We are not immortal as human bodies. Therefore, this is the step where one starts realizing who one is. First... a little baby is born. Then comes the adult that we are now, or are we going to be that old person who will soon in a few years be unable to walk and talk healthy? So who am I and what am I? Then the realization comes... we have a body that has 5 senses, and these 5 senses are control by our mind. We realize that we have an intellect that is able to discriminate, and we have an energy, which we call a soul or Atman. Eventually, we realize that this journey on Earth is temporary and we have been created by a power – which we call God.
So, what is the purpose of life then? That’s what we have to “realize” that is, we need to use our “real eyes” and find the true purpose of this life. And then, if we are truly contemplating and introspecting, then we will realize that we are not this body because this body is just made up of 5 elements: earth, water, air, fire and space. Because when we finish our journey, the space just goes, the earth mixes with the Earth and we are left with a few ashes, the water evaporates, the air disappears and the fire in you becomes nothing it’s over. Therefore, we realize that “I am not this body”.
What happens to our mind? Where did the mind go? The mind is part of the brain that’s creating the thoughts, but it’s also a function that’s part of the ego, which is not gross; it is subtle, or we can say that it is not tangible. What about the intellect? Therefore, together that ego, intellect, and mind form that personality which we think we are, but this is what one must realize. When we deeply contemplate and introspect, we realize that we are this intelligent ego which is not the body, but has a body, mind and intellect. But when that energy goes and our body disappears, then what happens to our ego, mind and intellect?
What is that energy? That energy is a power that comes from the Creator and it’s not in our hands. Nobody can choose when to be born and it’s impossible for anybody to choose a time of their death. So, that is not in our hands, but in the hands of the Creator. And when the energy leaves us, our game on Earth is over. The ego, the mind, and the intellect are reborn as per the law of karma. But if we realize that we are not the ego, the mind and the intellect, and that we are not that “Tav Tvam Asi”, but are something else, “Neti neti” we are not this. That will make us realize, we are the Atman, the soul, or part of that cosmic energy.
We are not just one dot of energy disconnected from the world. We are an energy that is connected to the global energy, the cosmic energy, and this consciousness that is everywhere. When we realize this, then the whole realization makes us live in a bliss, in Ananda, because we have come to know you are not this body, mind and intellect, but the energy. And that energy is nothing, but part of that cosmic energy that makes the wind blow and the rivers flow. It is a cosmic energy and we feel that we are a part of this cosmic energy and we become that.
Then, what happens? Then we are not the body and the mind, and there is no law of action, karma, and reincarnation. We are not going to die and be born again because you’re not the body. The body will drop whenever the soul wants or whenever the cosmic creation wants. Now in reality, how did we become a part of that energy that nobody knows about? But we do become a part of that energy whether that energy is God, a part of the creation, a part of the inferior part of the creation, or a part of a lower creator. We don’t know. We don’t need to know, but we do know one thing that we escape from this journey of life and death. We escape from this world or Samsar. We escape from this journey because we have realized the truth of this life.
Now this realization doesn’t get easily taught for anybody because it is realizing the self. One has to introspect, contemplate, understand, feel, and experience that “I am not this body”. One has to experience the Atman inside. One should be able to visualize and see the Atman in a bird or butterfly and in the clouds and the air. One has to see the consciousness and experience Sat Chit Anand the truth of consciousness that creates the Ananda or the bliss or the joy that leads to Nirvana, which leads to Moksh.
This realization is what is most difficult and we don’t get this because we are so busy in the world – and Samsar. We are so busy with our mind and our body that has got 5 sense organs in this so-called world that this world just makes us go round and round again and again that we forget that there is a God. We forget there’s a purpose to realize God and to realize ourselves. We don’t realize ourselves, and we continue this cycle of life and death and continue the karma, when in truth we have to realize who we truly are.
