I only wish I could share how much fun I had performing my little short story at a YMCA summer camp. I recorded it and kids and adults alike got a kick out of how animated I am in person. So please if you will help me with your comments as to learn if it is my story that was good, or more my ability to be a good story teller. Thanks, kkandle Below is a story I wrote for the little kids in Charlotte, North Carolina who help inspire me.
"Ring ring ring." The alarm clock sounded and micah got up from his bed. Micah was really sleepy and dressed himself slowly for summer camp. It is early enough that Micah can eat breakfast. But Micah did not eat breakfast. Micah is in a grumpy mood. He rushes to get his bookbag and forgets his lunch money on the table. Micah made his first mistake of the day leaving his lunch money. Micah runs to the bus stop without looking both ways as he crosses the street. Just as he stands near a tree he hears a bird singing. Micah picks up a pebble and throws it near the bird...which flies away scarred. Micah laughs and says "silly bird". In a few minutes Micah is bored. He feels a little grumble in his tummy. The bus arrives. "Took long enough." Micah says impatiently. The bus however, is on time as usual. The bus driver, Mr. Train, is always nice. (lol) Micah gets on the bus and sits down. Mr. Train says, "Good morning Micah!" Micah grumbles, "Morning Train.", in a not so friendly voice. Mr. train smiles and continues driving the bus. Micah is really hungry now. He is wishing for something to eat. Suddenly a dark shape catches his eye. It is a pink and black butterfly with yellow spots on it. The butterfly floats above Micahs head and lands on his shoulder. This is no ordinary butterfly. It is a talking butterfly! Micah is surprised to hear it say, "If you are hungry boy, I will share my food with you." "You got any pancakes?" Micah says roughly. "No. But here is the bread of life. You may have some. If you eat the bread of life you can be full and clean until you eat again." Butterfly says with a warm yellow smile.
Micah looked at the bread of life butterfly wants to share. He saw this bread is a pinky fingernail size, and only a wafer or cracker. Micah did not say, "No thank you." Instead Micah says; "What in the world do you mean? I eat more than that! This is not more than what we get at church for communion! Butterfly! You are small and so is your food. Go away! You do not have enough for me to eat!" Micah says in a selfish voice. So butterfly flew out of the buses open window. The bus arrives to summer camp and Micah is still hungry. As he walks to class Micah wonders about butterfly. Did she really talk to him or was he just sleepy and dreaming? Ruthie is in Micah's class, and she rides the same bus. Micah says, "Ruthie did you see the butterfly on our bus?" Ruthie replies, "No...but I like butterflies. Was it pretty?" Micah says, "I guess." then walks toward his cubby hole. Just as Micah put away his things he hears a little noise. Behind the jacket on a gold coat hook is a little mouse. Micah can barely hear it squeeky voice. The mouse says, "Hey Micah! Butterfly says you are hungry and her food is too small. I have boy sized cheese I will share with you." Mouse squeeks with his black eyes shiny like bowling balls. "Yuk! I don't eat with mice! You are gross mouse and so is your funky cheese. Run away..go find your cousin." Micah says this with no smile on his face or in his heart. So mouse quietly crawls back into his hole. Micah hurt mouses feelings and made mouses heart ache. Micah told mouse the truth and he did not use any bad words. But do you think Micah was nice in how he told the truth?
Micah and his class follow the teacher, Miss Dottie, to the cafeteria. Miss Dottie takes the girls to the girls bathroom. Mrs. Gingerbread takes the boys to their bathroom. Ms Pudding gets the group as they line up after washing their hands. Micah wants so much to be first in the lunch line, he did not wash his hands and ran to stand by Ms Pudding. Ms. Pudding says, "Micah, you forgot to wash your hands and you pushed others to cut in line." Micah did not apoligise. Micah says, "They slow and I'm hungry...I want to go first." So Ms Pudding made micah wash his hands and go to the end of the lunch line. The other kids are glad because Micah is rude. Micah did finally get his breakfast tray. He is so hungry he thinks he hears another voice, maybe it is his tummy. "Hello Micah." She says. Micah looks to his left and saw a little fairy floating in a bubble. She says "My name is Miss Balloon. Jesus sent me to comfort you."
Micah wonders how she floats in the bubble and if she can breath. Instead of asking he thinks more about himself and says, "I'm hungry, I need food Miss Balloon. I don't have time to chat with you because breakfast is almost over. I just wanna get my food and eat!" Micah says wearily. Just then Micah felt guilty, but he is not sure. Maybe he was just hungry. Something about Miss Balloon is soothing, and he feels better just to watch her floating in her bubble. But why? He did not know. No one else seem to see Miss Balloon....
(ok gang my fingers tired of typing this...i will finish typing it if anyone got this far reading later...)
